Tumblr Shitstorm Thread - Now Female-Presenting-Nipple-Free... We Think

Does anyone know why they're going this far? Even after banning all porn from their site, this just seems so excessive. The only possible reason I can think of is the CP factor, but even that doesn't feel like it explains all this. What's going on?

It's hard to decide between malice and stupidity considering both are available in abundance on tumblr, but the stupidity outweighs the malice so much that I'm going with it being an act of pure and utter stupidity with whoever did it having no clue what they were doing or what effect it would have, or even any motivation for doing it. Just the blind spasms of a drooling spastic gimping out at a keyboard.

There are a few rumors that it was actually their parent company Verizon who ordered the total porn ban, the reasoning being that it must be all the porn that’s keeping them from making money off fan bases and Black Lives Matter and not, you know, the bug-riddled interface and total lack of moderation.

The other theory I heard being thrown around is that this is part of an effort sited across the internet social media is making to comply to the standards of the anti-sex trafficking laws FOSTA/SESTA - which allegedly will hold websites liable for any sex trafficking related usage that occurs on their website, even if they aren’t or couldn’t be aware of it.

However regardless of the reason, Tumblr evidently treated this like any other update for them and did what they always did: slap together codes that are the easiest to write with no regard for the rest of the website’s coding, not run it through a test to see if it works, then push that sucker out at the eleventh hour with the reasoning that the users won’t give a fuck. It’s just that this time there was a little bit more on the line for this particular update and they really couldn’t afford to be their usual lazy, half-assed selves. If the new nsfw screening system worked as intended, they probably might’ve been able to hold out from total self destruction for a little while longer as it would still allowed for artistic nudity, art references, and grey areas for pinup artists to abuse loopholes with. But as it is Tumblr as a website is kinda sanitized to unusability.

I'm curious if anything's even going to change at all tomorrow. Maybe they'll just start banning accounts that have flagged posts? Do they have an actual staff that's going to even bother checking anything?

I don't think their algorithm even checks videos or animated gifs at all.

Blame Verizion, it was said that they were developing an algorithm to flag adult content earlier this year in hopes to clean up the site.

I was against FOSTA/SESTA from the beginning.

Motherfuckers be gentrifying my internet.

The big day is almost here guys! All NSFW content is getting wiped off of tumblr, and SJW's all over tumblr are going to protest and sign off. Will tumblr follow through with it? Will the SJW's lose their porn fix? Will they really, -honestly- log off? I can feel the cosmos :lol::lol: only time will tell.

Im honestly logging off because I need a fucking intervention in shitposting. My blogs are shadowbanned anyways and I have no idea if they'd survive the next day as I can't dig through 5k posts from 2015 to 2018 to see what's flagged on dashboard mode.

(also logging off to be honest as a protest isn't gonna do much. Just don't even visit the fucking site or even click tumblr affliated links. Just kill the revenue.)

Tumblr's already hidden NSFW content on my blog.

Welp. It was nice while it lasted.

... Except not really.

Count down to midnight like it's New Year's Eve.

Does Tumblr bring in any money for Verizon? Maybe they're deliberately trying to kill it, because I feel like you have to actively try to be this bad at running a website. What a mess. But it couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of people.

Verizon bought Yahoo who had previously bought Tumblr, and Verizon probably didn't like owning a site that universally has a reputation for degenerate porn and kiddie fiddlers. Verizon didn't directly want Tumblr under their umbrella, it just came with the purchase of Yahoo. This is just a shot in the dark but I'd actually wager that this is purposely excessive in the way that Verizon acquired a property that they wanted (Yahoo), but it came with an extra piece of baggage that they didn't want but couldn't return and also it smelled like someone masturbated on it. That extra baggage was, of course, Tumblr. And what's the quickest, easiest way for a company to deal with a baggage property they don't like? Purposely set the whole thing on fire in the name of whatever generic 'family friendly' concept comes to mind.

It's tinfoil hat as fuck, I know, but I can't help but feel like that's what's actually going on here. Especially with the staff purposely ignoring the incompetency of the flagging bot, along with the overall inefficiency that requires a user to manually check through upwards of thousands of posts.

Anyways, we'll see where this logout protest goes. I'm assuming nowhere.

Well, it looks they're still going to experience problems... (unsurprisingly)

I think this is more a "never attribute malice to what can be easily explained by stupidity" sort of scenario. From the sounds of it Verizon barely understands what Tumblr is and how it works and Yahoo was already an unprofitable asset to anyone with two working eyeballs and a brain when Verizon bought it, so this seems more like some old exec who only uses the internet for email and ordering off Amazon heard that Yahoo/Tumblr weren't profitable and after getting the cliffnotes as to what the user demographics assumed that a total porn ban would clear those profitability issues right up.

All of the NSFW blogs are still up (from what I've seen), they just have a warning when you click on them in dashboard view. And now porn that has been flagged is unviewable in dashboard mode, which you have to enter to view NSFW blogs in the first place in most cases.
However, if there is a NSFW blog that isn't flagged as such, you can still view all of the posts, including those have been flagged, if you go straight to the blog (name.tumblr.com) whether you are logged in or not.
I think that because deleting original posts doesn't get rid of any reblogs, porn will never actually go away. Tumblr should have overhauled the post system first, which may have led to no more custom themes on desktop, in order to better regulate the site.

Checked out my Tumblr, and i'm still seeing a parade of dicks. Figures that Tumblr would screw up the pornapocalypse just like they screw up everything else.

I seem to recall a bunch of people promoting a separate 'protest' that involved shitposting as much porn as humanly possible, so that might be a contributing factor.

So there was nothing to worry about? I hate fearmongering sometimes...
Well, I wouldn't say that. The whole "the porn's not deleted, just hidden" thing and the number of ways this can be exploited will likely means all the porn artists who left (and possibly the maps and shit) will eventually come trickling back with a new modus operandi, in order to get attention they'll start abusing loopholes like the sfw tag and stop using tags that were originally used as a courtesy for other users to block with - which will likely get the jimmies of SJWs rustled and bring back the whole "TRIGGERED" slap fights, with Tumblr's moderation still being non-existent this won't be caught or rectified until it's way too late, serious artists will likely be long gone because they'll trickle off to better websites (if they haven't already), the SJWs and porn artists will continue to butt heads until one of group just leaves for good, and Tumblr will continue to not make any money.

Probably not good news for Tumblr or its parent companies, but the potential salt from all the above could prove to be entertaining.
