Tumblr Shitstorm Thread - Now Female-Presenting-Nipple-Free... We Think

Apparently this is the blurb from the new app

Makes sense to include the changes.
I’m mostly laughing at the “smoother experience” part considering their nsfw filter bot is so inconsistent it might as well decide whether or not something’s porn via coin flip, the bots so basic that porn bots have already found loopholes, people falsely flagged by the bot have reported inconsistent responses and sometimes inconsistency in whether they get an automated response at all, and I hear on the grapevine that there’s another bug where posts that were falsely flagged aren’t getting cleared so much as shadowbanned as they no longer show up in searches despite no longer being marked as flagged.

Of course, Tumblr’s search engine has always been buggy so that’s possibly just it fucking up all on its own.

How do you check if anything is falsely flagged, though?
Basically a person has to go through their Tumblr account and look through every post they ever made. If the bot has flagged as nsfw, it has that banner that says "flagged for community policy violations." If you think it's been false flagged - which many posts are since it's a clusterfuck - then you hit the "review" button so Tumblr can run the image through the bot filter a second time to see if it gets the same result. If it doesn't, you might get an Tumblr support email telling you the content in question was mistakenly flagged, but so far that hasn't been consistent with users.

Problem is, there's shut-ins on that website who have made 10,000+ posts, and the only way to check if anything you've posted has been flagged is to go through your entire blog manually and do this review process for every single one. I can't say I blame people for not wanting to go through years worth of stuff to make sure they aren't collateral, especially since Tumblr gives no notice if a post does get flagged, but I think statistically speaking it's stupid to think nothing on your blog will be effected with how the bot has been fucking up if you have that many posts.

10k posts is a very conservative number. Think closer to 100k and more.

I think that banner only shows up in dashboard/draft mode, and not if you're looking on your actual blog. It would be great if there was something that shows up in the archive or mega editor, but I highly doubt it. So, basically, unless you feel like scrolling for eternity on dash view, you really can't check your posts for shit.

What a dreadful abomination of a heathen platform.

So it's back on the app store, despite the fact that the illegal porn is still being dispensed by the porn bots?
What the fuck was even the point of all this then? They've accomplished nothing!
They're just congratulating themselves for a good job after ensuring the eventual demise of their actual consumer base at the hands of a faulty algorithm given moderator privileges. Amazing.

The funniest part about this is, re-reading Tumblr’s announcement, Tumblr doesn’t actually say that anyone will actually be banned or deleted anywhere; just that flagged content will be permanently locked into a “private viewing mode” on a person’s dashboard, though no reference to whether this also means you can’t link to a post directly if flagged. (Which might explain the reports of de-flagged posts suddenly not being searchable if there’s no code to un-lock previously flagged posts) So Tumblr is basically sweeping all their toenail clippings and dust bunnies under the rug and hoping Apple doesn’t notice.

Made especially hilarious if the claims that all these changes are Tumblr’s efforts to conform to recent sex trafficking laws that would hold them liable are true. If the free falling userbase doesn’t kill Tumblr, then the feds just might.

I wanted to mention (for those who might not know) that you can view your blog contents in dashboard mode by putting in "tumblr.com/blog/your username/". If you're on a device where you don't have infinite scrolling, you can keep track of page numbers, and can even skip around. There will just be numbers after that url.

BTW, while going through my own blog looking for any flags, I also ran across a lot of old discourse posts that really made me cringe, and I just want to take a moment to thank people here for helping me get a clue. I know I can still get spergy sometimes, and don't always agree with everyone here, but still--thank you. I mean that.

I'm late on this and I don't know how late I am, but if it's any use to anyone here, Archive Team is also undergoing a massive effort of archiving nsfw Tumblr blogs. They have a submission form here. I don't doubt there are at least some blogs of importance to threads in this board.

Following up on this: Good ol Tumblr decided to IP ban everyone from Archive Team this morning. It seems they got 38 TB/>140k blogs of horrible, horrible porn and aren't giving up, but looks like things have stalled quite a bit. Sorry friends :(

Looking forward to whatever Good Decisions tumblr decides to make next...

Edit: they're even blocking archiving with the wayback machine. shit

Shit, what're they gonna do next, just flat out disable saving pictures?

Does anyone know why they're going this far? Even after banning all porn from their site, this just seems so excessive. The only possible reason I can think of is the CP factor, but even that doesn't feel like it explains all this. What's going on?

Knowing them, I bet that this wasn't their intention at all. I bet that this was tumblr's attempt to remove those dastardly pornbots, but somehow they fuck it up and block archiveteam attempt to save the only damn thing that is worthwhile on tumblr.

And why stop there? I bet it also accidentally forced thousand of people to log-out, deleted hundred of innocuous cat picture, remove tons of tags, ip-banned one or two nation, and kill ten of their staff.
