But usually hank and the other main characters were as much a part of the joke as the hippy/liberal/progressive people they would have in the show. Like the reaction hank has to something some hippy says.
Either way it didn't feel like they were just taking cheap shots out of spite.

I am reminded of the episode where Hank finds out that an unrecognizable x-ray of his impacted colon is being contrasted with a photo of a starving African at an art show. It could not be more trite, but Hank is outraged and uses an ag-gag law to get the artist arrested. He then replaces the starving African with a photo of himself playing football, signaling to the patrons that he considers himself and Americana to be more important than suffering foreigners.
