But the reason why they're so fixated on this event, Jan 6 is that it seems for vast portions of the Right, to be either calling it overblown, or a smaller, albeit sizeable minority saying it's justified.

In my view, I think the Jan 6 coverage is reasonable. Without a doubt, I think if the angry mob got their hands on AOC, Mitt Romney, Schumer and the other half dozen Democrats and centre-leaning Republicans whom their leader disparaged constantly as traitors/enemies of the state, then they would have either grievously assailed, or killed them. Without a doubt. The stability of the US as a political entity has been damaged by it. Maybe not irreparably. But I can only see it really healing properly as you see the Baby Boomers begin to die off. And the obnoxious, Trump Loving Right, as documented in this thread, become the increasing minority.

In any other country, if these things happened all the people who've been arrested would have been shot or hanged by now. They should count themselves lucky they're not on the end of a noose.

I think, context and where it happened is kind of important. (Some) in the crowd were promising to do some very not nice things to some of the top political figures in the country and it's kind of hard to pick out the harmless pranksters from the people who may actually carry out a threat in a giant mob. If I were in charge I'd have ordered to start dropping people until they got the message and backed the fuck up.
