Lincoln was very anti-slavery. He wanted to get rid of it for moral purposes.

He did, but he also quite explicitly stated: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." His absolute, overriding concern was saving the Union at all costs, and he did and would have done anything necessary to accomplish that, whether it was completely in line with his personal desires or not.

This is a dumb take. Lincoln went through so much work, drafting, editing, and re-editing, and consulting with the best practicing attorneys and legal academics in the U.S., to make sure that the messaging was absolutely clear and unambiguous in both spoken word, and print. The use of wartime powers was authorized because the secessionists were illegally occupying U.S. property, and preventing the appropriate governmental operation of all departments of the confederate states (except proper execution of the post offices). By the time the US people were well and truly informed however, assault of fort Sumter had already happened and the war was already ongoing as a consequence.

Lincoln's consistent delivery of the same nuanced message seems to have mostly been lost to the ages since moralistic soundbites from the annointed saint Lincoln are easier and more useful to sell to the public at large, but Lincoln made the war's foundation about slavery less than just about any human being alive.

I'm going to admit, I did get a bit mad when I said that because it really angered me how r/T_D act like Lincoln and Trump are the only presidents to support the African American community are genuinely false that I actually let it cloud my rationality.

It's not not wanting to be a part of a HoA so you can fly the USSR flag on your property. The first goal is necessary but not sufficient for the second, if nearby HoAs ban non U.S. flag displays.

He was certainly far from an unalloyed champion of black people, though, and his preference through most of his career was that, if slavery were eliminated, the emancipated slaves should be returned to Africa.

The idea was to return them to what later become Liberia and, in fact, many former slaves actually did move to Liberia after emancipation. Ironically, or inevitably, many of them then established plantations more or less modeled on the institutions of the very slavery they'd escaped and ruled over the natives brutally.
