Lincoln was very anti-slavery. He wanted to get rid of it for moral purposes.
He did, but he also quite explicitly stated: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." His absolute, overriding concern was saving the Union at all costs, and he did and would have done anything necessary to accomplish that, whether it was completely in line with his personal desires or not.
