Funny story about the whole gas stations and hotels part. According to my Indian friend, what happened is when the first waves of Indian immigration happened from the 80s and so, USCIS didn't know that "Patel" was a common name like "Smith" or "Jones" or "Sanchez" or whatever. They thought it was a family name kinda thing. Which apparently allowed a lot of Gujuratis (Indian equivalent of jews, I guess) to get a buncha people in because "yeah, that guy is, my maternal cousin. He's a Patel too!" And built hotels entirely staffed with Patels, who then later on went to build their own hotels, and so on and so forth.
