In the sense we have it, it goes back to the Enlightenment and the end of divine right as a justification for ruling. Before that, in Europe at least, the fact that you were in power at all was a sign that you deserved it. Because power flowed down from God, with the King below him, and then lastly to Mankind. Man obeyed the King and God, and the King obeyed God.

In terms of how pathological it is now, with oppression olympics and shit, that's all Postmodern but the rot probably started during Modernism and it probably leads back to Rationalism and the Enlightenment trying to undermine divine authority. We went from "people can abuse absolute authority" through some intermediate process to "having authority means you're an abuser."

The second generation KKK has a hilarious story of how it rose and fell. The Klan was pretty much dead until the mid-1910s, when Birth of a Nation came out. The film basically created "Klan-Mania", especially after Woodrow Wilson held one of the film's first screenings at the White House, making the film super trendy. Not just poor racists joined but also wealthy elites and political officials, as the KKK became a social club for the politically connected to join. It's where the cliched "Good Old Boys Club" came into being and that in a lot of towns and cities which were controlled by the Democrats, you couldn't even get elected dog catcher unless you were a part of the Klan. To the extent that you had shit like Harry Truman being a KKK member, as he had to join the Klan just to be able to have a political career and quickly abandoned said membership once he garnered enough political power to do so without any retribution from the KKK for leaving.

The Klan ultimately fell due to a sex scandal where one of the national leaders of the KKK got caught kidnapping, raping, and murdering a woman. The sordid details of the crime (which included him holding her prisoner as a sex slave, biting her flesh like an animal as part of his demented idea of foreplay, and other degrading sexual violations) and the revelation that the top brass of the KKK were secret drunks (in spite of the image of them being 100% anti-drink) and sexual deviants who whored around in private, decimated the Klan's public image of being "protectors against degeneracy" they presented publicly. Adding to this, the leader in question outright DOXED every known Klansman in his state, releasing their names to the press as retaliation for the Democrat governor basically told him to fuck off when he begged said governor to void his conviction via pardon.

The scandals and the fallout decimated the second generation KKK, which never fully recovered from the scandal.

Few quibbling points on an excellent post:
The OG KKK was about maintaining social order and basically keeping out northern values like race mixing. NBF favored the suppression of the black vote only so much as he thought former slaves were too dumb to vote with their interests and were only voting Republican.

The KKK really hit its nadir as reconstruction completed, but started to grow back before 1910 as European immigration increased, most of them non anglo or saxxon goddamn "Papists" like the mudpeople the Irish and Italians. The Klan started being seen as a way to fight back against these superstitious foreigners ruining America.

The downfall of the Klan really had less do with scandal and more about fraud. The KKK, which had even spread to Canada, was wasting its dues and not acting at all like . Stephenson only brought collection of growing issues to a point - the fact he had gone so far that he believed he could get away with that shit was a growing problem with Klan leadership who were losing their circumspection and morals. The 1930s started a decline where the prime demographic no longer money for dues and no time to deal worry about race mixing as they were trying to deal with economic hardship.

WWII was the true death knell for the 2nd KKK, in both a figurative and very literal sense. The nation-wide draft brought together young men from all over the country, and broke down a lot of the North/South divide. Even before the discovery of Hitler's Final (and correct) solution to Gypsies Jews, the KKK's message of racial purity was uncomfortably close to the message of da Natzees.

But, once again showing us who really runs the country, the IRS brought down the 2nd Klan in 1944 when they couldn't pay their taxes.

There was also a Journalist infiltrating the Klan and leaking some of the Klan's "Secret Phrases and Titles" to The Writers of the Superman Radio show, it is hard to retain memberships when you are turned into a Laughingstock because you are choosing Titles that are on par with Furries for Sheer unadulterated autism.

And here I was thinking of all the days the media shit on Bush when he went home to his ranch, and all the days they sucked Obama's dick when he was out gallivanting around with heads of state. If anyone's guilty of "costing us our happiness" and the death of recreational culture.... it's the wokescolds who infected pop culture and made everything a platform for advancing leftist views... and don't know why eveyrone is too bummed out these days to watch a movie or read a comic or buy vidya, even when they're locked up at home and getting free money....
