Game Journalists had been shitting on gamers for a while and then news comes out that Zoe Quinn cheated on her boyfriend with at least 5 guys, one of which was Naythan Greyson of Kotaku and Rock Paper Shotgun who had written some positive press for her before (though not TECHNICALLY reviews). People wondered if maybe she slept with him for good press and then all discussion everywhere was shut down. Even 4chan didn't allow you to talk about her, which raised some alarm bells. (Turns out she was just sleeping with the mod for /v/...who also worked as PR for a game studio...and also helped run a game journalist convention...and outright told game journos that their reviews are paid off and don't matter so fuck gamers, use your reviews as political propaganda...) As people began to investigate they found shit tons of collusion and then 15 websites all posted "Gamers are Over" articles on the same day that basically said gamers are horrible people, videogames make you a bad person, and we need to kick gamers out of videogames. This...did not go over well with gamers and thus GamerGate was loosely formed to tell journos to either apologize or lose their jobs. They instead went with "Call them misogynists".
GamerGate then became...about itself. See, as far as we could tell GG dindu nuffin so every time an article came out making wild accusations against GG it was a sign of corrupt journalism as people made up wild and stupid stories. GG also tried to prove that it wasn't racist/sexist/homophobic by donating to various charities and emphasizing the Not Your Shield movement...but NYS was just declared to be "internalized (whatever)-ism" and they complained about "Weaponized Charity" and soon started harassing the charities and forcing them not to take GG money or even act outright AGAINST GG. And well...things kept escalating.
What does this have to do with Trump? Well as the election neared, GG hated both Hillary and Trump because both had come out against violent videogames in the past so it was leaning pretty Bernie. Then Jessica Valenti, who had already written tons of anti-GG articles, was paid by Hillary's campaign to write something about Bernie so she invented the "Bernie Bros" which were a "GamerGate-like" group of men who were going to vote for Bernie because they hate women. Fuck logic! After Bernie "lost" and it became clear his nomination was stolen from him, GG didn't know who they liked: Trump or Hillary. Then Hillary did her "Basket of Deplorables" line, everyone in GG knew she was pretty much speaking directly to them and...well...how the fuck do you vote for someone who gets up on stage and says "I hate you and everything you stand for and hold dear"?! Couple that with the fact that at this point GG had just been following ANY bad journalism and the sheer amount of lies surrounding Trump made him at least a little sympathetic because it was the exact same shit GG went through. The end result was a lot of people in GG voted for Trump despite being Liberals.
HOWEVER! The left kinda...well they made up so much shit and so many lies that they forgot what was real and what was dumb shit they made up. They firmly believe GamerGate was a right wing astroturf campaign created by Breitbart to turn gamers right-wing and elect Donald Trump and the fact that he won PROVED it! There's no other explanation! It certainly isn't because the non-Trump candidate was specifically being hailed as "The anti-GamerGate candidate" or anything!
