Because, it "worked" for McCain-san. When the Dems hailed him as the leader-in-exile of the "True" Republican party, called him a great patriot who knew how to lose with dignity while appeasing the NeoLibs, said we needed more people like him? The rarest of Republican: an outright collaborator? It was GENUINE respect, not just rewarding a useful, vain, idiot who they were able to get hooked on the endorphin high of badmouthing his own side as being deplorable. Really, it WAS! It SO WAS!!!!

And Flake imagines himself as some kind of respected maverick bucking the system, not a petulant whiner who keeps swapping sides at the pick-up-game depending on who's got the lead.

Pretty much. This is actually a common pattern, unfortunately. RINOs know they can get asspats from the Democrat media if they 'buck the system' and vote against their party and constituents. This lasts until that RINO isn't needed any more -- Bob Packwood was a prime example of this bullshit. Everyone knew he was chasing his secretaries around the office, but it was laughed off because he was also a reliable pro-abortion vote in Congress -- until Bill Clinton became President. Then he went from (no shit here) 'jut jawed maverick' to 'clueless neanderthal' faster than you can say 'creeper'.

I know multiple Dems that now place Romney on the pedastal of "like, literally the only good Republican..." because he voted to imbeach.

These same people also called him the anti-christ not even a few years ago. I have no idea how a simple impeachment vote could absolve him like this, but appearantly it has.

I see this asskissing as their get-out-of-jail-free card if things go tits up and conservatives are so vilified that they all get holocausted. Trump is unpredictable and the 24/7 doom and gloom screeching the Dems do must've made some of them paranoid. I dunno man. They will be butthurt about this for a long time. It's gonna take a while for them get over the licking they've gotten from Trump.

Think about how many years some people spend in therapy for things that only lasted months. They will have been abused for at least eight years. It'll take at least twice that long for them to get over it.

Margaret Thatcher died in 2013 and Labour practically celebrated in the streets even though she hadn't been Prime Minister since 1990. And what she did to them doesn't even compare what Trump has done to the Dems.
