If I recall certain articles correctly, there are all-black dormitories on certain campuses because of a string of thought. It's about "protecting" blacks, and making them feel "safe" from whites. I think it's related to this notion that white cops execute blacks all the time. It's not true, but fits their world view in many ways such as identity politics, oppressor vs. oppressed, and resisting the establishment or something like that.

In other words, modern mainstream progressivism has embraced so many different social theories that even segregation can fit in it now.
