Solomon's Temple is part of Israel's national identity, as it was built by the greatest king of Israel (and the materials gathered by his father, David). Islam claims it because their leader allegedly had an out-of-body experience where he flew there on the back of a pegasus (I think?) and met up with Gabriel again. Why would the Muslims destroy the holiest site in Judaism for that?

Even aside from the religious Jews' push to reclaim the place where they would make propitiatory sacrifice according to God's laws, it makes sense that they would want to reclaim a pivotal part of their identity from a group that has, for centuries, tried to exterminate them all.

Muslims, the UN and leftists of all stripes don't think Jerusalem is or should be part of the state of Israel, at least not in its entirety.

Trump just said unequivocally that it is. And all of them know that the US president's (no matter who he is) word has far more weight to it than anybody else's could ever hope to have. Having to acknowledge that fact alone is enough to cause a shit storm, to say nothing of the more nuanced political consequences this will have.
