Fucking exactly. If Virginians didn't depose their governor over an unconstitutional gun ban, or unseat federal judges over unconstitutional open borders court rulings, then who really thinks anyone would protest this at all?
Except the "gun ban" part and "magazine ban" part (the ones the other 90% of state law enforcement said they wouldn't even enforce) didn't pass, only the lesser proposed laws limiting purchase of "too many" guns as defined by the state, which will probably be overturned by those courts as the 2nd Amendment can't be abridged without compelling reason and the state of Virginiia failed to provide one other than the usual nebulous "think of the potential dead kids if we don't" . Sure, it may flop at local and circuit courts, but I have a feeling the current USSC that is both interested and amicable to hearing 2a cases and ruling for the citizen when they do, will have a good chance of taking it and rending it to shreds.
And the 9th circuit was able to wake up enough Hawaiian Judges at 2 am to only delay, not stop, the push for border security by Trump, effectively making open borders impossible by Judicial fiat going forward because they fought it all the way to the USSC and lost. There now is no longer any higher court to appeal to, they can't halt the wall or deportations by ICE. Even when that one particularly clueless 9th Circuit Judge tried by issuing an injunction saying no, HE was right and didn't have to follow that "unfair and racist" ruling by the nations' highest court? Well, his triumph lasted all of 48 hours before the stinging rebuke came.
Only lack of will to prosecute the actual fence jumpers protects them now. And I suspect the next move by Trump will be pulling federal funding for states who "lack the will" to prosecute (i.e. - Sanctuary City bullshit) and will prevail in the courts on that count as well. The legislature sets the budget, but, the Executive has the privilege of directing it through prioritization.
So while the protests "didn't work" from an absolute perspective, it's clear the left is losing the ability to enforce their garbage by judicial and state-level executive activism, even if they still have the ability to
pass it in places, they can't win when the Feds will dismantle active obstruction and are willing to do it for them when they refuse through passive obstruction.
