BY LAW, the troops have to obey and respect the Commander in Chief, regardless who he is or their personal political beliefs. Asking the President for his autograph is basically saying "Sir, we respect you to the point we'd be proud to wear a hat you signed."

If they were campaigning publicly for a political cause, yeah, I see that, but it's basically asking their boss for an autograph, a man they have to salute whether they like it or not.

They've never given a shit about our military and the welfare of our veterans, so why should they pretend to care about any potential violation of military rules involving the Commander in Chief? If it's really in direct violation of some rule, getting an autograph has to one of the most tepid acts of disobedience anyone in the military can commit and as punishment they have to do 100 pushups or do extra laps out in the cold.

I can't find the exact excerpt from the UCMJ but this is an outline from a lawyer's perspective.

Articles 88 is contempt towards an official. The president being Commander in Chief, is an official. They can also be found under Article 92 (failure to obey a lawful order or command), and Article 134 (General...basically anything bringing discredit to the military).

Personally, I would have asked for a challange coin rather than a autographed hat, but that's just me. These soldiers aren't going to be in any type of trouble.
