Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday that his government has banned 1,500 "models and variants" of firearms in what he calls a ban on "military-grade assault-style weapons."

These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest period of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada," Trudeau said. "Effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import, or use military-grade assault weapons in this country."
Trudeau named the major mass shooting incidents that have happened in Canada in recent years from Polytechnique to the Danforth. He made special mention of the recent Nova Scotia tragedy: "Canadians will remember where they were Sunday April 18, 2020. This chapter in our history cannot be rewritten. But what happens next is up to us."

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said, "Effective immediately, these firearms cannot be legally used, sold or imported in our country. As of today, the market for assault weapons in our country is closed."

There will be a two-year amnesty period for those Canadians who currently legally own one of these 1,500 variants. In this time, Trudeau says that the government will set up a mechanism for fair compensation for these now-illegal weapons.

"In saying no to assault-style weapons, we are putting feminist ideas into practice," Deputy Prime Minister Cuntstia Freeland added.

The terminology used by the Trudeau government is significant as firearms experts have pointed out that "military-grade" guns are already not available to Canadian citizens.

How sick, using the horrible tragedy in Nova Scotia to punish all legal gun owners for a psychopath who obtained his guns illegally. Even if these measures were in place before it wouldn't have stopped it from occurring.
Before some wiseguy says "Canada has guns??" It actually has the 5th highest guns per capita in the world excluding dependent microstates.

I'm sure that these laws will be followed and obeyed, and thousands of rifles didn't just vanish into the many wooded and lake areas of Canada, aka the parts that aren't the cities, aka 95% of the entire country. Good job Justin. Really winning the war here.
 
The CBC article pretty much says it bans the usual guns you'd expect people like Trudeau to be ready to ban at any given crisis.

AR-15, Ruger Mini 14 on the list

Radio-Canada obtained an early draft of a list of firearms that will be included in that 1,500 figure. Guns like the M16, M4, AR-10 and AR-15 rifles will be banned; those styles were used in the Sandy Hook, New Zealand, Las Vegas and Orlando mass shootings. There are an estimated 83,572 of them in Canada.

The Ruger Mini-14, the type of firearm used in the École Polytechnique shooting, is also on the list. There are an estimated 16,859 of them in Canada.

The M14 rifle, used in the Moncton shooting, is also expected to be banned. There are an estimated 5,229 of those in Canada.

The department will hold a technical briefing with reporters later today on the changes, which are expected to be enacted by an order-in-council, or cabinet decree.

Worth noting is that in the article was a CBC link to an article that said the shooter bought illegal guns, smuggled some in from the USA presumably, stole a few from victims, and unlike Tarrant wasn't in any sort of gun club or was spotted at shooting ranges. So while thousands of people won't have AR-15s, it does absolutely nothing to stop a repeat of this incident.

Damn they got the mini 14 too. I was hoping the common wood furniture would trick them with that one.
 
Sounds like good times ahead for gun bootleggers near the US-Canadian border.

Also, was there anything passed/mentioned about replica cop cars? That was what enabled this guy to kill so many people, at least imo.
