Jade Hameister, 16, is now the youngest person to complete the polar hat-trick, having reached both the North and South poles as well as crossing Greenland.
In 2016 Jade gave a TEDx talk in Melbourne aimed at inspiring young women to ignore societal pressures and to think adventurously. Among the commenters on the talk's YouTube video were several men saying "make me a sandwich", implying women should stay in the kitchen.
"We had this kitchen in a tent at the South Pole and I made a ham and cheese sandwich," Jade said. She walked a kilometer from the camp to the South Pole for a photo of her holding the sandwich, which she posted on social media with the comment: "I made you a sandwich (ham & cheese)".
The adventure was partly funded by National Geographic, which will release a documentary later this year.
