Flying is a little more complicated than that. Much like Driving, Flying an Airplane is a Privilege not a Right. The Two Fire Extinguishers tapped to his legs under his pants would seem to be a pretty good giveaway towards his actual intent. And as pretty much any pilot will tell you, jumping out of an airworthy airframe following an engine stall is not the reasonable action, at any time. Parachutes on the rare occasions they are worn when piloting, are there in the event of a catastrophic failure of the airframe and it's control surfaces. Such as loss of a wing or the Vertical Stabilizer. Landing with a stalled engine is one of the core qualifications required when seeking a pilots license. It's part of the test.

The aircraft he took off in didn't have an airworthiness certificate. If the airport had twigged to that before he took off they sure as shit could have and would have shut him down. They have no obligation to let an unqualified and dangerous maniac into the sky. The thing is much of General Aviation operates on the honor system, at least until the paperwork eventually catches up with you. Because proper safety is so ingrained into it that nobody expects this level of human stupidity.

Saw an update today. The person in charge of the NTSB investigation is Senior Investigator Elliot Simpson. (I’m not going to link the video. It’s 20 minutes of dry investigation reports from other plane crashes). He appears to be one of the NTSB’s senior most no nonsense investigators with a ton of experience in small plane crashes, public interest crashes, skydiving related incidents, and human stupidity.

Some of his known very public lead investigations were the Hawaiian skydiving plane crash from a year or two ago, a horrifying midair collision between two floatplanes in the Pacific Northwest, the twin engine plane crash in California that killed 4 people in a house who were watching the Super Bowl, and the fatal crash of a NYC sightseeing helicopter in the East River.

I’m thinking our boy Trevor may be in for a spot of bother over this one.
