Transgender Teen Arrested for Montgomery County School-Shooting Plot​

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) arrested an 18-year-old transgender high-school student on Wednesday in connection with a plan to commit a school shooting.

Andrea Ye of Rockville, Maryland — who goes by the name “Alex” — authored a 129-page manifesto detailing her desire to attack an elementary school, writing that she wants to be famous and describing her strategy for carrying out the shooting, Montgomery County police announced in a Thursday press release.

After obtaining a search warrant, MCPD found internet searches, drawings, and other documents related to and threatening mass shootings. The police department said in its statement that it has worked with the county’s public-school district to increase security at local schools.

Ye, currently in custody at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit awaiting a bond hearing, was charged with threats of mass violence.

Authorities have not indicated whether they will release Ye’s manifesto nor the contents of her internet searches or drawings. The information available at this time is similar to another school shooting, the March 2023 attack on the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennesee, in which Audrey Hale, a biological woman identifying as a transgender man named “Aiden,” killed three nine-year-old children and three adults before being shot and killed by police.

Nashville police refused to release that shooter’s manifesto, though it was later leaked and the veracity of its contents confirmed.

As National Review reported at the time, the transgender activist group Trans Resistance Network released a statement mourning Hale’s death, saying that — after first acknowledging that “the first tragedy is the loss of life of three children and adults” — “the second and more complex tragedy is that Aiden or Audrey Hale, who felt he had no other effective way to be seen than to lash out by taking the life of others, and by consequence, himself.”

Parts of the manifesto were reportedly included in the application for statement of charges. It read:

"I want to shoot up my school. I've been preparing for it for the past few months. As I sit in front of my dad's gun case and stare at the sleek, black gun inside, all I can think about is my finger on the trigger, taking aim, and killing people. The gun is an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. It's the kind of gun with a long barrel and a stock you put up against your shoulder. The gun is going to change lives tomorrow."

"As I walk through the hallways, I cherry pick the classrooms that are the easiest targets. These ones are close to the entrance and have windows in the doors. I need to figure out how I'll sneak the gun in. Maybe a duffel bag will work. I just hope security doesn't stop me."

Was a story about killing Wooton students a threat or a story? Police in Montgomery County say 18-year-old Alex Ye had written a 129-page ‘memoir’ that discussed killing other students, but Ye had said it was a work of fiction.

Alex Ye, of Rockville, was charged with a single count of threat of mass violence, a Maryland law that makes it illegal to “knowingly threaten” to carry out an act that would place people at substantial risk of death or serous physical injury.

The recently discovered document told the story of a character named “James Wang.” Ye had described the work, told in the first-person from Wang’s perspective, as fictional but an acquaintance of Ye’s told detectives the character bore “striking similarities” to Ye.

“As I walk through the hallways, I cherry pick the classrooms that are the easiest targets,” Ye had written, according to the filings, adding one page later: “I have also considered shooting up my former elementary school because little kids make easier targets.”

He was arrested on Wednesday, according to court records, and was being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center without bond.
Ye had attended Wootton High School in Rockville, according to court filings, though it wasn’t immediately clear when he was last a student there. Ye appears to have spent much of the last 15 months hospitalized under psychiatric care, according to charging documents, most recently over the last several weeks. There is no indication from the filings that Ye had any firearms or specific plans to obtain any. Court records do state that Ye purchased a BB gun online without his parents’ knowledge. The records indicated he was considering it to commit “suicide by cop,” a term that describes a person who points a weapon at police officers because they want to be shot.

The charge against Ye specifically stated that Wootton was the target of his threat, and police had recently increased their presence outside the building as a deterrent.

An attorney listed in court records for Ye could not immediately be reached. Ye has been hospitalized for mental health issues — including homicidal and suicidal ideation — at least three times since late 2022, according to court records.

Around late December, 2022 and early January, 2023, a Wootton High School therapist referred Ye to the Montgomery County Crisis Center, according to the court records. Around that time, he underwent an emergency mental health evaluation and was hospitalized for threatening to “shoot up a school,” homicidal ideations and suicidal ideations, according to court records. He was released but by February, 2023, was again hospitalized for homicidal ideations.

“Ye also claimed to be Jesus Christ and was going to crucify himself,” detectives wrote.

The teen was discharged in July, 2023, and sent to a residential facility, according to court records.
On March 6, Ye underwent another emergency mental health assessment and was admitted into Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.
Inveim stigators got search warrants for his home and online accounts, found the 129-page book, and began piecing together what Ye had written.
The book opened with a strong disclaimer: “This is a work of fiction. All the names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents in this book are either the product of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental. This is not a threat of violence, nor does it represent the author’s beliefs.”
