Trans woman among Miss Germany finalists

About 15,000 women nationwide applied to become the next Miss Germany, according to the competition's organizers.

The 10 finalists were revealed on Tuesday, and one of them is making headlines: 19-year-old Saskia von Bargen, a trans woman who lives with her parents and three younger sisters in the village of Friedrichsfehn, Lower Saxony.

"The fact that I'm in the final as a trans woman means a great deal to me," she told DW, adding that it shows that our society is changing — "and that trans women are also seen as women."

Von Bargen knew from the age of 5 that she was a girl. She preferred playing with girls and wearing dresses. "Already early on my parents realized that this was not just a phase," says the 19-year-old, who praises her parents for being supportive from the start. At school, however, things were not always easy; she wore boys' clothes to avoid bullying.

At age 11, von Bargen started taking puberty blockers, followed by feminizing hormone therapy two years later. This is also when she came out at school, which made life easier for her and she started feeling more accepted. When von Bargen was of age, she underwent gender surgery. Saskia is her chosen name.

Meanwhile, she has found a way to deal with hate speech. "I react to negative comments by not reading them at all. I don't offer them a platform, but block and delete them," the 19-year-old told DW.

Miss Germany revamps its image

Winning a beauty pageant used to be associated with having good looks and the ability to walk like a runway model.

But Miss Germany Studios, the company that organizes the national pageant, has radically changed the judging criteria in an attempt to revamp the contest's image.

Since 2019, candidates no longer prance on the catwalk in a bikini. Height and weight are also no longer important. In fact, appearances play absolutely no role, according to Jil Andert from Miss Germany Studios. The women rather have to demonstrate strong personality skills and "are meant to be a source of inspiration," Andert told German press agency dpa.

In 2022, activist, entrepreneur and actress Domitila Barros was elected, and is currently still reigning, Miss Germany — as the first woman of color. Barros grew up in a Brazilian favela, where she taught street children to read and write. Today, she is an advocate for sustainability, environmental protection and social justice.

But sociologist Nina Degele from the Freiburg University is left unimpressed by the competition's makeover and considers the Miss Germany format outdated. In order to be relevant, she believes "the format would have to be abolished and replaced by something completely different."

The trans ambassador

Von Bargen said the Miss Germany pageant was the "perfect platform" for her to tell her story. A retail trainee in a fashion store, von Bargen wants to educate people about what it's like to be a trans woman. She talks openly about things that went wrong in her first surgery. In total, she underwent 12 surgical procedures. Despite the hardship, she doesn't regret it.

She applied to the competition so she could promote awareness of transgender issues. "For the future, I wish that trans identity and LGBTQ education are not taboo topics," she says, arguing that all questions need to be answered, everyone needs to understand. Von Bargen sees herself as an ambassador for the cause. If she wins, she will have €25,000 ($26,500) at her disposal.

Not the first trans woman to make it to the finals

Von Bargen is not the first trans woman to come so far in a Miss Germany pageant. Last year, Gadou, a trans woman from Hannover, also from Lower Saxony, made it to the finals.

But von Bargen is hoping to be the first trans woman to win. The finals will take place on Saturday at the Europa-Park in Rust, in southwestern Germany.

Other finalists include an energy consultant who wants to promote women in a male-dominated field and a midwife who aspires to start her own birth center.

The Miss Germany competition, which was held for the first time in 1927 but forbidden by the Nazis, is not to be confused with Miss Universe Germany, where an official candidate for the Miss Universepageant is selected.

makes me seriously doubt we are ever getting ww3: the electric boogaloo from the Germans. then again maybe this is the equivalent to the hard times of the weimare republic and it will the catalyst which lights a spark under the germans and inspires then to elect a strong charismatic leader who wants some breathing room in europe. though that might be a bit :optimistic:

No one should want ww3. And Hitler fucked up badly, if for no reason then getting Germany involved in a war with THREE peer powers simultaneously.
But they need to dispense with war guilt, stop gulping down Ameicbn pop culture, stop making a beeline to racial and national suicide, or have troons and non German, non European women vying to be Miss Germany....let alone a troon who is not a woman at all....

Actually a tranny won the other contest last year or so. This shit is all fake, they said themselves that it's not about beauty anymore.

Most masculine Asian (male)

Didn't know Adolf was redpilled on this trash too.

Still better than Liz Dong-Gone though.

Why did they have to walk out and show off the merchandise then?

The wife/daughters force you to watch Miss America. If you have to sit through the talent show then at least you can have a bikini babe segment.

I am honestly not surprised. I mean have you seen German women? Angela Merkel is a fair representation of classic Germanic beauty and feminity.

They are probably so relieved they can finally say their contest will have nothing to do with the looks and they can stop being a worldwide embarrassment.

The only pretty German woman I have ever heard of is Claudia Schiffer. Otherwise see examples below and decide for yourself.

They supposedly have their origins in May Day celebrations of the Middle Ages, with the "May Queen" usually being a woman of great beauty. Balls or courtly dances were a separate affair, though there was overlap in terms of why they were held (i.e., to showcase how well-to-do someone was). Modern pageants grew out of this celebration of beauty, though their earlier history (e.g., in the 19th century) saw the public being against them. Likely because it was seen as vain to celebrate women in that way.
They should make balls a separate affair again amirite

Germany is completely degenerate theres no point in being a Miss anything. So all the good looking girls go elsewhere.

As an attractive German Woman you either are a professional model and do some informal prostitution on the side to try out possible future millionaire/billionaire husbands

Or you just go into porn.

Have to love the irony of a "miss" anything with a man in it. Truly clown world!
inb4 troon magically wins it again.. Remember <0.5% of the population but the very "best" of humanity in all ways.. even as male women.

And the image of the finalists (as well as subject of the story) sure confirms this! Oof.
What is even the point of this anymore?

This is even funnier when you become aware of the fact that even Sweden has been pumping the brakes on the whole tranny thing, yet here's Germany. Gott bewahre Deutschland.
Is that the actual finalists, or the HR department for the pageant? I mean, once I read that it's not about beauty anymore, it makes sense either way.
At this point, beauty contests aren't about what's universally beautiful. Nowadays, they're about what those in power (and the activists they kiss the feet of) want to be considered beautiful, yet the plebs still won't consider.. any of that appealing. This sort of thing is mocked all the time, and most don't watch cable anymore or have adblockers installed anyway.
Oh well, better keep pushing this in advertising and the arts!

As much of a meaningless curiosity as beauty pageants were, it's awful that even the shallowest forms of entertainment are obsessed with calling the below average (let alone the outright ugly) beautiful.

Even dismissing the troon, these CANNOT be the best Germany has to offer. I've been there multiple times and whilst in frank honesty I didn't find the women as attractive as most nations I've visited, I don't recall them looking as bad as this:

The one in green on the right is attractive, that's about it. And aside most look like they're around forty or older. Hideous outfits are the finishing touch.

@Stoneheart You're a kraut, right? What's going on here? Are beauty pageants just so niche / frowned upon in the heartland of European progressivism that attractive women don't know about them or are reluctant to participate? Or is there some active drive to reject the concept of sex appeal?

Compare the picture above with a local Italian beauty pageant!

My guess it because the real good looking girls move onto modeling or something else, so no needed to do a beauty pageant, so the beauty pageants only get women who want validating or who have a ego.

With smaller ones could be a stepping stone to get those gigs.

But it isn't the case in most countries. And even if there's a lower average beauty in women applying, so long as the variability is high enough you ought to be able to select ten or so who are attractive and under forty. The assembly here look like they've actively filtered for frumpy and middle-aged.

Also, is there really a paucity of women who have an ego or want validation? Never anywhere I've been! :)
