Some shockingly mediocre journalism from kotaku. Would have been a much better article if it the situation wasn't handled so delicately.

https://kotaku.com/for-years-a-smash-bros-impostor-allegedly-duped-frien-1816169320

Over the course of three years, an impostor convinced the Smash community—as well as her friends, housemates and girlfriend—that she was a reclusive and revered programmer behind the famous Smash mod, Project M, several sources close to the issue say.

The supposed impostor, who goes by many names and who we’ll call Katy for clarity, denies that she impersonated the Project M luminary, but four people have all told Kotaku the same story, and the details line up. For three years, those people say, Katy convinced western pockets of the Smash community that she had access to Project M’s code and development secrets. Katy even moved into a house full of Smash players who believed that Project M was her baby, and now say they are questioning the real identity of their housemate, who has been missing from the house since these revelations unfolded last week.

Those people say that Katy has spent the past three years masquerading as one of Smash’s most private heroes and amassing all the social clout that came with it. When the truth came out, it was a devastating revelation to the community of players who once trusted this stranger and, now, are left wondering just who the hell they let into their lives.

Another example of a trans person coincidentally using their name change to hide their past. really makes u think

I'm not surprised at all that Mew2King was the first to smell something off about this one, you can pull the wool over a lot of the Smash community's eyes but if M2K is suspicious of someone they don't tend to stay around long.

Yeah. The whole story is honestly a trainwreck and we might need to get some KF detectives on it to get to the bottom of it. It feels like there are several unreliable sources and I'm particularly intrigued by the fact that article presents Katy as already having plans to move to SoCal before having an invite to the "Smash house". That's a bizarre coincidence, that she'd just happen to be moving halfway across the country, to the same place as the guy she initially pulled the ruse on.

I have a vague suspicion that Boostman and Katy were...IN CAHOOTS.

Says the guy with a Mew2King avatar who could probably actually claim to be Mew2King and idiots here would believe it.

Epic Smash Bro Prank Gone Wrong Gone Sexual (you won't believe what happens!)

The writer was a fact checker for Vice so that should say it all

The writer actually did a better job than the idiots that got conned by a tranny.
You know the whole mysterious developer that is so reclusive?
He is an active poster on a forum. And the writer just PMed him to get info.
That's how simple solving the mystery of is this tranny really him or not was.

Try this total speculation on for size:

Boostman and "Katy" were lovers. They decided to make "Katy" be Magus to increase the profile of the tournaments. Boostman admits that he bragged about knowing Magus and that it increased the "buzz" around his tournaments. Once that shit died off, Boostman hooked up with the Balcony guys and moved with in with them, using his connection to the supposed-Manus (Who they wanted to interview and thought was a "god") as leverage.

Eventually, Boostman and Katy decide it's time to to get Katy into the house, so they have Katy say that she was coincidentally planning on moving to California. How fortunate for everyone involved! They have a space for her so they let her move in, but now the grift has moved into meatspace where it's much more difficult to pretend to be someone else. Eventually it all becomes unraveled and Boostman throws Katy under the bus, claiming that he was also a victim of her lies so that he can stay in Smash-house.
