These are the books the movie "Cabaret" is based on and a tremendous piece of gay history for those interested.

He felt extreme disgust at his own genitals when they touched his clothes, and said that if he didn't have a family, he would have amputated them. Also the male role during sex didn't appeal to him anymore. HOWEVER, another doctor (I don't remember if it was Hirschfeld personally) wrote him a FUCKING LETTER, which eased his pain and provided solace. He managed to continue living normally. So treating it as a mental condition absolutely works.
