Trade & Currency in a Post-Fiat World - or what to barter with when shit hits the fan

expendable/useful goods that don't rot are currency: canned/jarred food, fresh water, thermal blankets, lighters, tools, bullets, fuel, medicine, cigarettes, alcohol. Bonus points if you can measure out units.

Pretty much anything that gets handed out during disaster relief, tools, and creature comforts.

Flashing your coin purse of gold, silver coins is a good way to mark yourself as a target for robbery.

Trading cases of ammunition is also problematic because the people using cases of ammunition post SHTF are probably not people you're gonna want to associate with.

Canned goods, bottles of stuff like fish amoxicillin, cheap handles of vodka, disposable lighters will certainly have value.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
The tragic and hilarious part of that account is the government seizing privately-owned weapons as if they're the best ones to have them during a time of huge civil unrest. The government ends up getting destroyed and those weapons end up back on the street anyway, just not in the rightful owner's hands.
