Favourite role/ role type?

Yeah, although the added complexity was fun. I can't really think of a role in Throne of Lies that I hated playing. ToS has a bunch of boring ones though.

The Drunk was my favorite role in ToL since you were immune to redirect, you could redirect people and also you could redirect people onto themselves. You had to fake claim in that role since evils would kill you because they feared your alcohol-fueled powers of just sitting on an assassin all game redirecting them into whoever you didn't like until you made them stab themselves.

I wish that game didn't die.
I don't think it was that hard. I felt the game was obnoxious by forcing you to write wills in a fixed way using its own ingame abbreviations (for example, the "healer" classes such as Physician and Chronomancer had to write "DnR; DnD" next to their target if nothing happened that night instead of just either leaving it blank and only specifying when they were attacked or writing something like "eternal dog mongel-nothing", otherwise people would kill you because "bruh shitty will"). The classes weren't that different from ToS either; sure, they all were a bit more complex on paper, but if you switched from ToS to ToL, you'd notice too many similarities between both games (Knight being a mix of ToS's Bodyguard and Vigilante, Princess being an Investigator, Physician being a Doctor who can gather minor information on deaths, Possessor being ToS's old Disguiser, Sorcerer being Arsonist, etc). Hell, it also suffered from the same meta problem that ToS did (Prince reveals D1, King starts VFRing people D2). The real problem was the playerbase itself; in ToS, unless you played Rank, you could dick around and most people would give no shits, whereas in ToL, not even having the "Newcomer" title would save you from the people who acted as if their life depended on every single match they played.

Also, the game's not technically "dead" (I was able to have a full match last Saturday), it's just that you can only play it if you're willing to waste a free Saturday to play with the same ~15 people avalible over and over and over again.

In a nutshell: fun concept, shitty execution.

It's meant to be played with friends... Not through online matchmaking. IMO ToS's online matchmaking ruined the game.

That's why jackbox party works while ToS fails; ToS tried to reinvenet Werewolf as a video game, and removing interaction from it, while jackbox embraces the interaction and was built around it. Making jackbox an infinitely more playable game.

I went the other way and started playing ToS when it got hard to find a game in ToL. So all the roles in ToS seem like you just have less tricks available. Lots of sweaty players though, you're right.

My favorite ToL game was when BD had 4 CWs for whatever reason and I was MM, so I got us all to fake claim CW. BD managed to murder all their own wizards.

Bringing this thread up from its grave lmao. Town of Salem 2 is to be released into early access on May 26th, so in about 3 days (TOS2 website announcement | archive, BMG announcement | archive)

Biggest changes look to include:
  • Free movement around the town at night, as a ghost and in the lobby.
  • A new set of roles/factions including the apocalypse with a new game mode to match for the four horsemen.
  • No more mafia.
  • Vamps will be in their own game mode.
  • Private lobbies.
