It's so over. Touhou 20 was too hard, so now we have:
Ehhhh eay modo.png

Edit: also, Touhou Patch members reportedly worked on the translation.

Looks like the development started as a Switch port by fans.

Which then led to it being a whole new circle made up of a bunch of other people. Maybe we'll still get a decimal game if ZUN only did remix work on it. Supposedly there'll be new game modes added, but I'd be pretty bummed for a remaster being this year's Rettasai announcement.

yup, eosd remake for steam and switch 2
EDIT: its funny how they dropped an eosd remaster only after it had been decompiled
This thing? It says it's like 97% ready, but still nice to see. I know that the guy who is trying to decompile TH1-5 managed to do the first one, but I haven't heard about any source ports coming out of it.

TH10-12 had infinite continues, but you would lose your score and powerups after using them (no yellow full power items for you). TH15 had a Lunatic Device or something, where you would be forced to relive the same moment without gaining new bombs or power items. The first game also had infinite continues even in Lunatic, but that was a weird game. So, I wonder what exactly is the penalty for using infinite lives here. If it's just a cheat for noobies, then one can just ignore it, lol.

Oh so that's why the publisher is different this time. Fan-made remake turned official, sorta like Sonic Mania. Makes sense.

In any case, I wonder if there's a (premium with goodies) physical version going to be available for this thing. Also, was it only shown at the Japanese Direct? Lame!

According to this YouTube comment from some Japanese dude, ZUN found an archive of his old illustrations, which is why the art is now in HD.

So anyone pulling the "AI slop" card is pulling it out of their ass.
according to ZUN, ZUN found an old eosd backup

its complete, just miscellanous assembly stuff is not right, but otherwise its 100% eosd, even replays dont desync
the portable branch has an SDL2 port that works on linux, but some textures are broken

EDIT: the game drops on cirno day too

I mean, that's cool. A remake of the first Windows Touhou game could be neat, as much as EoSD is over-represented in Touhou media I will admit that it's a staple.
Edit: For the video for people watching, admittedly I was kinda disappointed that it uses the old sprites instead of new art but then again it has a really nice charm to it.

Hopefully if the EoSD remake does well (it probably will imo) then it could potentially lead to remakes of Touhou 7 & 8 as well.

Edit: someone mentioned the possibility of it happening to the PC98 titles as well but I wouldn't keep my hopes up.

I like how the visuals are in the remaster. In whatever ways that ZUN did to find his old work and upscale it for newer screens, they actually look a lot better than what I initially thought. Can't really blame the fanbase for being skeptical of the art direction using AI though. It really was a lot of bad circumstances stacking up on one another in 20's case, people were on guard for a reason.

Anyway... I suppose this means we've officially entered the Remaster stage of Touhou's life span. This TSA Reprise group they've formed for this project, I will be watching their run with great interest. Perhaps when PCB and IN comes around, we'll see how well they'll stack up to the originals.

well apparently it was redrawn by Curee from AQUASTYLE
some people say the new arrangements are the original midi versions but im not sure

AI was used for touhou 20 because of the theme

i dont like the stupid fucking sans serif font theyve chosen for ui it makes it look like a cheap mobile game

Here is how the midi are meant to sound on the SC-88Pro which ZUN apparently used as his modulator (or possibly SD-90 by EoSD time), so this is likely as close as we get to what ZUN intended when composing for EoSD. I had read previously that EoSD music is so clunky-sounding because it was designed for MIDI and doesn't carry over so well onto a .wav modulator. By MoF the MIDI era was over.

I'm quite pleased for a remaster of the old pieces since I am not fond of the direction the music has gone since TH14. I loved EoSD melodies but the construction was woefully unsophisticated compared to later games of the same era for the above reasons, so a remaster scratches that itch for me. The snippet of Flandre's theme is largely the same to my ears but Shanghai teahouse ~ Chinese Tea sounds beautiful with an extra channel for a new deep strings countermelody and the title screen sounds fantastically dramatic compared to the original .wav and midi.
