Tommy Robinson - ex-leader of the English Defence League - has been banned from Twitter.

His account is marked as being "suspended", but the BBC has learned that the US company has decided to permanently revoke his access.

Twitter declined to comment, but it is understood the decision was taken after Mr Robinson was judged to have breached its "hateful conduct" policy.

It had previously temporarily suspended the activist several times.

Mr Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, left the EDL in 2013.

Most recently, Twitter had blocked his account for a week at the start of March.

He said at the time that the reason was that he had posted that "90% of grooming gang convictions are Muslims".

The social network had removed his blue verification tick four months earlier.

Mr Robinson's @TRobinsonNewEra account had about 413,000 followers at the time it was blocked.

In addition, Twitter has acted against another account - @tommysnewspage - which had also been associated with the 35-year-old.

Mr Robinson continues to operate a Facebook page, a YouTube account and a personal website.

I find it interesting that the BBC got the nod on this story. DM etc not mentioning it, but they are concentrating rightly on what the labour party has been saying about Joos.

And what does it say about the state of the UK when a guy like him has them yelling "SHUT IT DOWN!" every time he opens his mouth?
The problem I have with Robinson is that he harms causes he supports - eg he nearly got some of the defendants in a grooming case off by standing outside the court shouting about Muslims.

If he didn't get into stupid fights and didn't run his mouth I'd be willing to tolerate him, but at the moment he's someone I can't stand. There's also the fact that he fleeces his supporters by asking for legal aid and then starts wearing a Gucci jumper.

As if the government weren't going to let those rapists get away with it in the first place.

If the government wanted to be rid of Robinson and all his like, all they have to do is enforce the laws and protect their citizens. The government can't complain when they fail to uphold their end of the social contract and people take them to task for it.

The point stands that those rapists, be they Muslims or no, have to get a fair trial and a man standing outside the court using the words ”Muslim paedos” is jeopardising that.

The issue with Tommy is that he's A) Not an actual racialist. He's a 'civnat' that just wants to hoover up money; with no interest in the actual state of Britain; the man is a grifter. B) Fedded as fuck. I dislike the constant barrage of 'this shit glows' that people always produce the moment anyone on the right ever tries anything; but Tommy is the textbook example of controlled opposition. He's basically a boogeyman that everyone on the left likes to point to.

He's worthless for anything, he makes the right look bad; and he needs to fuck off.

I find the reasoning tenuous. Simply because the government wants to curtail free speech and reporting doesn't lead to a risk of issues with trial - and if a judge is concerned about news reporters or the like tainting the jury he can always sequester the jurors.

No, the only way that Robinson could possible 'jeopardize' the prosecution is by giving the government an excuse to do what they wanted to do in the first place - allow for organized gangs to rape children and get away with it.
