Well, as you say, his story isn't worth much. I think it's likelier that he hears any possibility of a surgical date at any time as an ironclad promise to schedule him for surgery tomorrow.

That said, no question that he's giving off bad vibes to anyone within a hundred feet. He's a psycho abuser who has lost his shit to the point that he can't conceal it any more.
