There’s something wrong with the bananas….?

The sticker on it rang up as bananas but I guess it's possible someone trolled me, they were exceptionally large for bananas but on the small side for plantains I've seen. They definitely had the sharp banana curve and thin stem whereas plantains have kind of a continuous curve and thicker stems

I've never had a plantain so I looked it up and apparently they're not especially sweet/require cooking and my banana ice cream was very disappointing today

In my head that's two points for bananas (sticker, visual appearance) and two points for plantain (texture, little sweetness)

Do plantains come as bunches? Whenever I've seen them they've been individual plantains and this was a pretty large bunch, I think six of them. If they can come in bunches that wouldn't be a point for either side

Yeah, they also grow in bunches, like bananas. It's hard to say what it was, it might have even been some sort of weird hybrid.

I bought some that were terrible but not in the same way as yours it sounds like. The green was all gone and there was just a dash of brown starting to show up, my preferred level of ripeness, but when I went to peel it the skin was just incredibly tough, almost like peeling birch bark off of a limb, and when I bit into the banana it was practically crunchy, it was bizarre, the texture was more like a slightly mushy apple than a banana. I enjoy underripe bananas as well where the peel still has a lot of green even if it's not my favorite, but this entire bunch was way, way tougher then even those.

The flavor was... Ok-ish, but they all tasted underripe compared to the skin. I let one get way overripe, at least going by the peel, to make a small batch of icecream with and while I didn't try a bite of it it felt more like a regular ripe banana as I broke it into chunks to blend up, but even with the skin just all brown and mushy/gross looking it was still very tough to peel
I've had this recently and the experience was so off-putting I won't buy bananas again. Alsomhad the worst dose of the runs after eating it, and I am normally blessed with a cast iron stomach, but what I had was exactly how you described.

"The good news is that it burrowed clean out the other side. The bad news is that it was a female earwig...and it laid eggs."

Earwigs are very good moms. 🤗

I will buy a plantain the next time I'm grabbin' groceries and settle it once and for all (possibly)

They are usually pretty distinctive from each other. But I've seen some huge bananas. Right now I've got some definite bananas that have bruised but still don't taste that ripe. Maybe because the weather has cooled down. They ripen faster when it's hot out. But it could just be a bad crop.

I havent quite experienced that (burgerland) but I feel like in the last year I have developed a pretty minor but very annoying allergy to bananas? I love them, but actually quit eating them unless I can immediately brush my teeth and use a tongue scraper to get every remnent out of my mouth. It like, makes the inside of my mouth feel so fucking weird now, like eating a way too green one would or the weird enzyme thing that pineapples and cranberry juice does that kinda breaks down the skin a little bit. My tongue will straight up turn gray and have some skin slough off it. Ive never in my life had this happen. I actually dont know the last time I ate a banana because it was so uncomfortable. I figured it was a medication side effect or something, but I mentioned a possible mild banana allergy to a coworker recently and he said he started feeling a weird irritation after eating them in the recent months too but hadnt considered it was possible to be allergic, lol. I did not mention my 'allergy' seemed to come on somewhat recently to him, but he said his did, and that one interaction made me feel like there might be something up with the bananas these days. Pure anecdote but really weird coincidence.

The plantain has been acquired, I shall allow it to ripen further. It doesn't look anything like the shitty bananas I had aside from being yellow and curved and as big as those bananas were this has 2-3 inches on them and this one wasn't an especially huge one from the plantain box

I went through a bunch of trouble to get a good picture of the plantain with my vinyl and completely forgot it's spoopy avatar month so I'm not even using that as my avatar atm lol

A little while ago I had a banana that can very accurately be described as rubbery. The whole bunch was and I threw them away. I don't like wasting food but it tasted deeply wrong. I don't recall when exactly - perhaps about two months ago. Now it's got me paranoid about other bananas and whether they are slightly rubbery in the same way or if I'm imagining it. But I'm not sure that I am - I think there is a difference. Hard to say. But whatever they were or are doing, they got the dosage wrong or something because it was very obvious on that occasion.

I saw a video about a Bill Gate's food treatment named Apeel. Apparently by some legal wrangling it doesn't need to be said that it's used even on organic fruit or veg. I think because they call it "plant-based". The video said that it made the fruit taste "rubbery."

We really need to squeeze information out of the supermarkets and confirm if this is being used or not. I've tried and it's not easy to find out.

EDIT: A quick search for "Apeel" shows a tonne of videos and articles saying how Apeel is safe. Snopes has an article saying it's safe as well. So makes me almost certain it's bad for us. I firmly believe that Bill Gates wants to kill us.

The plantain was basically all black this morning so I cut into it and I have thoughts

The skin was similar to my shitty bananas but much, much tougher. I almost couldn't peel it even after running a slit all the way along it. A big similarity was that the inside of the skin separated from exterior requiring me to basically peel it twice

Texture wise, very similar. The plantain was more bitey/'crunchy' (not actually crunchy but I don't have a good word for it, just it snapped when I bit into it but not when I chewed it) than a normal banana, similar to my shitty bananas but more pleasant, if only because it wasn't unexpected

Flavor-wise, very different. The bananas had very little flavor, but what little flavor they had was standard banana. The plantain was almost sweet-potato-y in a good way. Based on descriptions I wasn't expecting it to taste like much but it would have been totally edible if I felt like eating it raw. Very pleasant, no complaints at all. If they weren't such a massive pain in the ass to peel I'd probably keep one or two on hand for a snack

I looked up how they're normally eaten and it seems like most people fry them. The recipes I found didn't look very pleasant so I just made one up myself. Tablespoon of butter in the frying pan on medium heat, light sprinkle of turbinado sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Very good but kinda mushy, the other recipes had them cut into chunks rather than slices like I did which I think is important so there's still some toughness to the center, the thickest slice was far and away the best one because it still had some texture aside from the crispy exterior. I'll definitely keep it in my pocket as a 'special occasions' kind of treat when I have visitors

So, without googling it, my guess as to what could have happened (without just sticking to the boring answer of 'I got a shitty batch of bananas') is maybe I got a bunch of hybrid bananas/plantains which caused them to be bigger, have a lot of starch, and didn't allow either flavor to shine through. I don't know if that's a thing that can happen but it makes sense to me!

@Overly Serious
I paid the extra twenty cents/lb for organic bananas when I picked up my plantain and they were very good, so if you want some bananas I'd just buy those for time being

Banana allergies are pretty common. If you have a bad reaction to latex rubber, you'll probably have a bad reaction to bananas.
I’ve heard other people say the bananas are rubbery too. How odd. Let me see if I bc an find an example
Sounds like they're picking them way too green. The gas they treat them with will turn the outsides yellow, but the insides will still be underripe.
I'm lucky that bananas are backyard fruits here. Just gotta watch out for the banana spiders.

I recently bought a bunch of bananas, I like them green but they were too underripe, couldn't peel them. Cool, I'd let them ripe a little more... But they never did. They got gross instead, a little yellow but clearly inedible. I never tried it because it just didn't look good. I thought this was a one off thing, pretty surprised to see this thread lol
