LinkA Blockbuster store in Bend, Oregon, will become the world’s last outpost of the once-booming video rental chain later this month when a store in Perth, Australia closes its doors.
Located in the Perth suburb of Morley, Australia’s last Blockbuster store will begin a going-out-of-business sale on March 8 and close for good at the end of the month, the Australian Associated Press reported. The store’s owners attributed its downfall to the arrival of Netflix and other streaming services in the Australian market.
The Blockbuster in Bend became the last U.S. location of the bankrupt chain with the closure of two stores in Alaska last summer. Now, it will be the last Blockbuster store in existence on Earth.
“I had no idea,” Sandi Harding, general manager of the Blockbuster store in Bend, told local newspaper The Bulletin Opens a New Window. when asked about the Australian store’s closure. “I wondered which one of us was going to hold out the longest.”
A dominant brand during the late 1980s and 1990s, Blockbuster once had more than 9,000 stores in operation. The chain shut down its last corporate-owned stores in 2014, but some franchisees have remained operational in the years since.
The rise of Netflix, which instantly streams movies and television shows to its base of nearly 150 million paid subscribers, has rendered physical video rentals obsolete. Other competitors in the burgeoning space include Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.
Harding told The Bulletin that her Blockbuster store is still a solid business and has become a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world.
“We probably open up 10 accounts a day,” Harding told the newspaper. “It’s crazy the amount of people that come in and want a Blockbuster card.”

Yeah every Family Video I've seen usually has a Papa Murphy's or Little Caesars attached like a parasitic twin. Maybe even a Cost Cutters.

I got curious and checked out their website and check this shit out.
In order to use Blockbuster's online service, you have to have Dish first. Talk about a deal killer. Netflix doesn't give a shit so long as you've got a connection to the internet.

Not to be that guy, but this technically isn't a Blockbuster. It's just a store that was licensed to use the company's name and trademarks. Same goes for the ones in Alaska and Australia. They aren't really owned by the company which is why they weren't all closed down back in 2014. They have all the hallmarks of a Blockbuster, but they're not technically a Blockbuster.

Man when the blockbusters in my town closed down, it was like a fire sale. I was a gamer back then and I remember they sold basically everything in the store. A buddy of mine worked there so I was privy to the exact moment everything went on sale. I pretty much bought a copy of every game I wanted to buy but hadn't gotten around to for like the last 5 years, and they were all like 1-3$. I left with like 40 vidya games and a bunch of movies for a c note or so.
To be honest though in a nostalgic way I kind of miss going to blockbuster to rent a brand new game or movie I didnt have the money to outright buy at the time.
And walking through the aisles looking for something random that you hadn't seen before (often while stoned) was in an oddly inconvenient experience that more often than not was pretty enjoyable in a weird way.

I actually preferred renting videotapes from Tower Records. They had freakier movies in their horror section and a much wider variety of anime.

There's always some version of a defunct company that exists out there, often due to having simply the right to use said namesake. It's nice Japan kept theirs.

The sopranos and boardwalk are fucking TOP tier television.
Oz was a great quality show, and really pushed the boundaries for what could be a successful tv show, paving the way for the sopranos to utterly change the game.
Tbh tho oz wasnt really my thing though, amazing production and all, but at some point that show basically turns into a bunch of buttfucking.

Yeah...the bench press shitting scene was just too much for me. I wasn't a huge fan of Oz but it was good tv. I stil think Sopranos and the Wire were probably some of the best shows HBO put out. HBO also had probably the best comic based cartoon series with Spawn. Keith David as Spawn was perfect. Whenver I read a Spawn comic, I hear his voice as Spawn.

You're right about Oz, but I liked the Greek mythology subtext throughout. The Greek angle fits with the buttsex as well, I suppose. I'd personally put The Wire and Deadwood above Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, myself, those shows are incredibly well written and acted IMO.

We didn't have Blockbuster in my area. The big rental places near where I lived were Hollywood Video, Movie Starz, and two local places, one of which was actually based out of a grocery store and the other was attached to a pool hall. That being said, I still miss video stores greatly. Netflix and Hulu are decent, but fuck Redbox.
The Hollywood Video and the grocery store video rental place were the best. And I'm not talking some little kiosk or stand, I mean there was a whole side room in the grocery store that was a video store. Now it's the room where they place the paperback books, magazines, Hallmark cards, and similar fare.
I can't remember how many times I rented Digimon World 2, The Godfather PS2 game, Crash Team Racing, Wrongfully Accused, Evil Dead 2, and the 1978 version of Dawn of the Dead.
The one with the pool tables outlasted all the other video stores and stayed in business for way longer than it should have (and keep in mind I lived in a rural poor area with bad internet so video stores lasted a little while longer than everywhere else) and that was because the video store secretly was a front for heroin dealers.
