Video Games Chronicle: TheGamer website suffers widespread editorial layoffs (archive)

It’s the latest in a series of job losses across games media

Video game website TheGamer has suffered widespread layoffs, according to former staff.

On Wednesday, several former members of the site’s editorial teams took to social media to announce that they’d been laid off. According to multiple former employees speaking anonymously to VGC, entire section teams have been “decimated.”

According to those still at the outlet, TheGamer will continue in a slimmed-down form, though those who remain aren’t clear on how that will manifest. According to staff who spoke to VGC, these layoffs have been expected, but the scale has surprised those still at the site.

VGC has reached out to Valnet for comment.

TheGamer was founded in 2017. TheGamer’s parent company, Valnet, is also behind OpenCritic, Game Rant, and, as of earlier this year, Polygon.

Features lead Jade King took to X to confirm that her entire team had been let go as part of the reshuffle at the site.

News editor Rhiannon Bevan, who remains at the site at the time of writing, wrote on Bluesky, “TheGamer is losing so much talent today, it breaks my heart. On a personal and professional level, I cannot put the loss into words.”

These job losses are the latest in what has been a difficult period for games media. In May, popular outlet Polygon was sold to Valnet, which resulted in many staff, including then editor-in-chief Chris Plante, losing their jobs.

Also in May, cult-favourite video game outlet Giant Bomb faced significant staff departures as part of a dispute with its then-owner, Fandom. Following this, the site’s staff purchased the brand from Fandom and has persevered with a fan-supported model.

Other leading publications, such as IGN and Gamer Network, which owns sites like Eurogamer, GamesIndustry.biz, and VG247, have also experienced job losses in the past year.

I have never heard of this website
Haven't heard of this site before. I'm looking forward to the meltdown when Kotaku and The Verge eventually get nuked.
TheGamer is perhaps the most transsexual of gayming noose outlets. You're lucky to have avoided encountering it, but it was a favorite of @CatParty. Here are some of xheir greatest hits on A&N:

Blows my mind that 'game journalism' is a real thing. I guess these Journalists are 'comforting the afflicted' by distracting them with stupid slop.
It had more value a couple decades back, when a larger portion of gamers were snot-nosed kids without internet.

These days... well, you can see for yourself. They're too big and weighty to act as the first word, and too biased to act as the effective last world.

All game journalists are shit but TheGamer still manage to stand out amongst the sea of shit as an exceptionally shitty piece of shit, writing the worst articles that seemed like they should have been parodies of how bad game journalism is
Hopefully every game journalist employed to write this kind of shit is gone soon, even their attempts to directly fleece their audience of retards are quickly dying

It seems like more recently they have been leaning into writing guide articles to try to get SEO, guess it isn't working out so hot. Type the name of a new game and a boss fight or crafting material and you'll get The Gamer and Polygon articles about it in the first five links.
Random example, here's one of their infamous sites Game Rant, now reduced to writing articles about how to find health upgrades in Ninja Gaiden 4, and paying big bucks to be at the top my search:

I'm archiving all of the Hogwarts Legacy articles and checking out random articles:

All The Things That Aren’t Reviews (archive)
Even the article in which we explicitly said ‘we will not review Hogwarts Legacy’ was criticised for being a biased review. I don’t know how you get further away from a review than a sentence that says ‘no review’, but I hope one day I discover it.

In fact, months before Hogwarts Legacy came out, I received a very long and very entertaining email about how our review (which we did not write) was biased, while reviews at other sites (which, months from launch, did not exist) were much fairer. I often wonder what on Earth that person had read.

Why Are You Covering Atomic Heart When You Boycotted Hogwarts Legacy? (archive)
Ultimately we do not feel any single person involved with Atomic Heart has the influence of JK Rowling, nor do we feel crossing any line in the sand with regards to purchasing or playing Atomic Heart sends as worrying a message to corporations as overlooking Rowling's views on trans people does. If it were conclusively proven that Atomic Heart took Kremlin cash to create pro-Russian propaganda or that they supported the invasion of Ukraine, we would feel differently.

Everyone Is Wrong About A Pokemon Game For Adults (archive)
2023 "Palworld Bad" article without mentioning Palworld. Probably because Palworld was announced in 2021 but didn't go viral until early access in 2024. I believe later articles criticized Palworld.

So You Bought Hogwarts Legacy But Want To Support Trans People - What’s Next? (archive)
Think of this as an olive branch. Though some people have leapt on the game as a right wing dog whistle, celebrating its sales as a blow to all things woke, I know a lot of you wrestled with the choice of whether to support the game or miss out on both a return to your childhood and the New Big Thing. I’m disappointed by what path you have chosen and you don’t get to have everyone think you’re a good person while making the more selfish choice. But this does not need to be the end. If you’re looking for ways to offer material help to trans people, there are a variety of ways you can do it.

I’m Willing To Throw People Under The Bus If It Means Pretending To Relive My Childhood (archive)
How can I support a group if supporting them involves even the slightest inconvenience to me, the main character of the universe?
Some people tell me that I shouldn’t like Dog Kid University anymore because its creator has said they don’t like an entire group of people. And, look, I get it. As someone who was bullied as a kid, I understand the pain someone feels when they’re told they shouldn’t exist. It hurts to be excluded, let alone actively told your very presence is a societal evil. I’d assume. None of the bullying I received was actually that or even remotely like that, but I pretty much use my life as the default by which to judge any experience. It’s a skill I have.

Hogwarts Legacy Draws Further Complaints Of Antisemitism (archive)
Fans of the Harry Potter books and films may have noticed that a lot of the minority characters are reductive and often just downright offensive. You've got a Black wizard named Kingsley Shacklebolt - an object used to chain slaves together - an Irish wizard called Seamus Finnigan who keeps blowing himself up - an obvious IRA parallel - and an Asian witch called Cho Chang - I'm not even going to explain why that's bad. Now add a trans character with a terrible name to that list. There are also the goblins, who embody negative Jewish stereotypes, and it seems Hogwarts Legacy has doubled down on the antisemitism.

No One Is Asking You To Give Up Harry Potter (archive)
Lol

Hogwarts Legacy Isn’t Even A Real Harry Potter Game And You Still Can’t Give It Up (archive)
JK Rowling’s lack of involvement in Hogwarts Legacy should make you want to buy it less, not more
Desperate grasping at straws. Also has Ukraine flag logo in the archive, a nice blast from the past.

Did Hogwarts Legacy Seriously Just Make The Antisemitic Goblins The Villains? (archive)
There are very few people of colour in the books, and those who do exist are often relegated to the background and given ridiculously stereotypical names: for example Cho Chang, whose major qualities are being good at school and… oh that’s it. Even white characters aren’t spared this - just ask background characters Anthony Goldstein and Seamus Finnigan, the latter of whom is very stupid and likes to blow things up. A Black female wizard’s skin tone changes dramatically across the movies as she’s recast with very little regard for authenticity, and the weird views on gender are clear to see with the fact the magic stairs stop boys from going to the girls’ dorm but do not stop girls from going into the boys’. Good looks are frequently associated with beauty, while ugliness of evil characters is repeatedly overemphasised, several women (and zero men) are constantly negatively defined by their emotions, and then there’s the literal slaves in the form of house elves. Don’t worry though, they like being slaves.

Please Shut Up About JK Rowling (archive)
Again, I don’t think Rowling is an irredeemable monster. I don’t think anything is solved by calling her a bitch, or worse. The problem is that this is a verbally violent issue on both sides.
Stop Putting Down JK Rowling And Start Lifting Up Trans People (archive)
So instead of moaning about Rowling on social media the next time she makes a stink - which she will, trust me - try and champion the trans people in your life, or creators who identify as such who are responsible for games, films, shows, books, comics, or anything else that means something to you.
Articles from "Stacey Henley" and "Jade King" from Dec 2021-Jan 2022. But they couldn't ignore it hard enough.

Maybe just focus on writing about games next time
I think they were doomed no matter what. Youtube and social media are just a better tools for spreading trailers and news, getting the word out on what games are good or not, finding new games, generating hype, pretty much every reason you'd go to a website like IGN. Even the surviving gaming outlets are pivoting to just being social media shows with higher production value. Polygon is putting out youtube video essays and IGN reviews now have a 5-10 minute segment afterward of the reviewer talking to the camera like a vlogger

Everything from The Owl House tag, almost all written by Jade King. Spoiler alert.

As a non-binary demisexual trans woman I’ve never felt happier that I can turn to the majority of mediums and find narrative themes and nuanced characters designed to represent the queer experience and do away with heteronormative attitudes that have been the norm for far too long. We obviously still have a long way to go.

Knights Of Guinevere Is About More Than Just Disney Trying To Destroy The World (archive)
Over the course of 26 minutes, we see an intriguing dystopian world filled with lovably flawed characters, all centering around a charming blue android named Guinevere. She’s been mass-produced with the aim of bringing unbridled joy to visitors of Park Planet, all while lining the pockets of her corporate overlords. Considering Terrace previously made The Owl House at Disney before departing the company on not-so-good terms, it makes sense to see such a comparison made so quickly.

A corporation weaponising nostalgia in the form of a gaudy theme park that literally floats above its employees as they struggle to make ends meet definitely feels like a way of processing trauma not just for Terrace, but thousands of others. Anyone who has been left with no choice but to let their creative ambitions be sanded down to meet the depressing whims of suits in high places that have no idea what they’re talking about will relate.
