That's assuming Microsoft doesn't implode on itself in 5 years from now.
When a company has 79 billion in cash, they can typically buy their way out of trouble. Will their stock take a hit? Maybe, but it would be optimistic to say that they're in any real danger, especially with Azure and AI services. I want to imagine a pristine Unix-driven future, but I never get what I want so I have to take what I can get...

Since we've left this thread hanging on using XP in current day, I'm curious - do we have farmers here who some retards from 4cuck's /g/ like to call "baby ducks"? As in, people who still use Windows 7/8.1 to this day. I'm really interested to learn about your experience using an "outdated" OS in this day and age.
I run a windows 8.1 vm with an older gpu passed through for the handful of programs that I can't get running perfectly on Linux. It boots up in 3 seconds and consumes 500 mb while idling (specifically because I disabled all security and networking) and runs everything it needs to without issue.

I use both Windows and Linux, Windows just feels much "noisier"; lots of bubbly buttons, background processes, etc. It's a shame, since the Windows NT kernel seems pretty good, but the utilities surrounding it are shit. Booting back into Linux is much more calm and organized, I can open a resource manager, look at the processes, and understand what each ones purpose is. One kill -9 closes any of them without a fuss.

Recently with Windows I was trying to run something that searched in the Documents directory. In Windows 11, Documents isn't actually on your computer, it's a symbolic link (there's a Windows specific term for it but I can't be bothered) to a Documents directory in OneDrive, AKA a computer in Uttar Pradesh. When I tried changing the symbolic link to point to a Documents folder on my own fucking computer, I got a popup saying "Access denied". I have admin privileges. I think I had to fix it using Powershell or something.

TLDR Microsoft needs the Day of the Flush if it is to survive.

There's user account data stored inside that's protected against manipulation while you are logged in, so you need to log out and log in as a different admin user to modify it. You may need to unlock the built-in Administrator account, or create a new admin user to do that.

Also, why is your Documents folder located on a remote One Drive server? It should normally be on your system drive, and you could move it to another drive, then create a symlink.

Basically instead of being in ~/Documents the documents folder is in ~/OneDrive/Documents with a symlink to ~/Documents and the onedrive folder is a network mount where local files get deleted to save space and get redownloaded on demand.

Yes, and there's no reason do have it like that. Just disable OneDrive.

I swear, 95% percent of people who are "done with Windows" never even bothered to properly learn it.

I like having my laptop and desktop in sync.
I did this using dropbox and directory junctions 15 years ago. It was kinda slick but this was before all the big tech companies were aggressively scanning everything your have on cloud storage. You couldn't pay me to leave a primary user folder autosyncing to any cloud service.

These days I put anything important on my NAS and just have explorer pins to the folders I use.

Browsing old CDs on a nostalgia trip.

Back in 1998/99, I used WindowBlinds to customize my Windows 98 desktop. I took the MacOS look of the era (MacOS 8 ) as a basis, and optimzed it for better ergonomy:

As you can see, I was already using the kind of wide buttons that were introduced much later with Windows Vista because I figured wide buttons were more comfortable to use. I also moved the classic window control buttons to the left side. Apple did that only a few years later with MacOS version 10.

Shoutouts IrfanView, using it on every Windows install to this day
