That's not really true. People did in fact marry young, even well into the 18th century. As far Europe was concerned, it was far more common in eastern Europe, while people in western Europe were more likely to marry in their earlier twenties/later teens. The U.K. was unique in the fact that people did generally marry later, but they appear to have been alone in this regard. And even then, child marriage was not unheard of.
