I just watched the pilot and I found it dead interesting, I do like how they've left it ambiguous on if The Tick is real or actually a part of Arthur's imagination.

Kind of gritty, but still the same humorous background you'd expect.

I signed up for the free trial of Amazon Prime Video to watch this after seeing the pilot, and was disappointed when I found out that the last six episodes of the season aren't coming out until 2018.

I was a bit disappointed by the pilot, TBH. I'll give the series a go, because I really enjoyed the cartoon, but I remain a bit sceptical. Casting Peter Serafinowicz doesn't quite sit right, to my mind.

I know I'm necro-ing this thread, but there has been a lot of necro-ing lately, especially of oldish semi-forgotten media. Blame covid for making me go back and watch things I never had the time to see before. (And also, the alternative would be me making an unnecessary new thread about this show.)

I never read the original Tick Comic, but I grew up with the 90's cartoon. (I've only seen the first one or two episodes of the 2001 show, and thought it was ok at best, aside from Warburton being perfectly cast as The Tick. Also "BatManuel" was a hilarious upgrade from "Die Fladermaus.")

But man, I'm 6 episodes in, and the 2017 Tick is some damn good shit so far.

I know this show got prematurely canceled, and won't be coming back after a certain point, but I'm enjoying it so far, and hope it continues to be this good up until til the end.

A few stray thoughts: The Tick costume was terrible in the first episode. They randomly changed it in the second episode to one I liked that a lot more. They even made a joke out it, which really doesn't make much sense at the moment... but I won't even mind if they don't explain it, because the second costume is so much better.

At this point (6 episodes in) I think this Tick is some kind of mental manifestation made physical from this Arthur's obvious insanity. If so, that's very different from the cartoon, but I don't mind it if that's the case. It was fun how they tried to pretend that The Tick was entirely imaginary at first, but I never actually believed that. I hope they don't blow this though...

The show is never as funny as it could've been, and I found a lot of the humor to be too obvious. That said, Jackie Earl Haley is great as The Terror. Love that guy.

Also, read the 12 issue original run of The Tick. Its quintessential 90s indie comics.

I feel like the second season is a big improvement. The first season felt a little too...serious. A bit too much focus on the super moth suit, and Arthur was written a bit oddly. The second season was a lot better because it refocused back to the comedy/satire or the genre.

The Tick costume was terrible in the first episode. They randomly changed it in the second episode to one I liked that a lot more. They even made a joke out it, which really doesn't make much sense at the moment... but I won't even mind if they don't explain it, because the second costume is so much better.

The first episode was a pilot episode made in 2016 to gauge audience reaction. The second episode (and subsequent rest of the season) didn't come out almost a year later. They had to address how the suit looked different at least once, so better to just hang a hat on it and move on.

Incidentally they do the same thing again in season 2 episode 1. It took a year and change to film and release, but chronologically it takes place just a day later. So once again the Tick is just randomly making changes to his suit? armor? skin? and then they never bring it up again.

When they first showed Arthur I was like "why is he acting so weird" and then they show what happened when he was a kid and its like "Oh. Oh I get it." which is also everyone else's reaction when they see what it was.

The thing that surprised me most about the show is how GOOD Peter Serafinowicz is as The Tick. Who would've guessed that The Sommelier would be perfect as a big blue indestructible idiot?

I disagree with the first part of that, but you're right Jackie Earl Haley is always great. So great that I didn't even recognize him until a few episodes in. What a great actor.

I don't exactly read a lot of comics, but alright. Maybe I will.

Haha, I just saw them do this. That was actually handled in funny manner, and it got a chuckle out of me. I was ok with the post-pilot Season 1 suit, but the season 2 suit looks even better to me.

Its very different in its presentation, and has a lot lower budget but still...I find it very charming. There is some very amusing acting that you'd enjoy, and it isn't like you'd need to binge 8 seasons. (The animated show is good too.)

The only 90's version of "The Tick" (aside from the comics) was the cartoon. I think I see what you're getting at though chum. The Warburton live action version came out in the early 00's. I'Il probably watch the rest of that show after I finish watching season 2 of the newish Amazon series, but I'll have to get to the end of the new show first.

I kinda burnt out on the second season. I never stopped liking it, I just sorta tuned out.

I will say, I really did like how they didn't try to capture the 90's Tick. This very much felt like a "The Tick" take on the modern cinematic comic book movies. I think it was a good take, and Serafinowicz did a great job winning me over to his Tick.

I've adored every adaption of The Tick, I find it really charming that Ben Edlund essentially remakes the first episode of The Tick with every adaptation right down to The Tick damaging Arthur's home in an attempt to find the secret superhero lair. I'm very sad it couldn't continue but I'm happy that we got what we did. I think what ultimately killed it was that Amazon got "The Boys" which also targets Superhero parody but with far more edge and satire whereas The Tick is about celebrating the absurdness of comic book logic.

Hope Ben gets to do at least one more run at The Tick, maybe some studio will just throw him a $50 million budget and let him make a movie.

I didn't say this before, but I actually have access to every episode of every Tick show, and I decided that I would watch the first episode of all three in order, and then watch the rest of the version that I liked best, just from the first episode. The newest amazon version won that hands down in my opinion, but that isn't because I didn't like the previous ones.

I will now probably watch those other two versions, but should I watch the 90's cartoon (which I distinctively remember watching as a kid, and even remember reading books about) or the 00's live action (which I've seen like 2 episodes of) first?
