“The sun never sets on the British empire.” Variations on the phrase have been used for more than 200 years to describe the scope and power of the nation and its occupied territories. But from a logistical standpoint, Britain gave up the centuries-long imperial distinction last October, when it reached an agreement to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. It was a long time coming for the Chagossians, many of whom have worked for decades to regain control of the island. A joint statement issued between both countries in October vowed the deal helped to “address wrongs of the past and demonstrate the commitment of both parties to support the welfare of Chagossians.”

Technically speaking, however, sunlight continued to shine on at least one portion of British-occupied land for about another six months. The primary holdout? A section of the British Antarctic Territory, including the Pitcairn Islands that experiences perpetual sunlight six months out of the year.

But thanks to cosmic geometry, a major chapter in world history has just now come to a close. As first highlighted last year on Reddit, the spring equinox on March 20 marked the sun’s passage over the celestial equator, kicking off half a year of darkness around the South Pole. And given last year’s deal with Mauritius, this means Thursday night at 10:50 PM EST (2:50 AM on March 21 in London), the sun finally, literally set on the British empire.

It didn’t stay dark for Britain too long, however. About an hour after dusky conditions on the Pitcairn Islands, light began to peek over the horizon roughly 10,000 miles away in Akrotiri and Dhekelia, two non-contiguous British territories located on the island of Cyprus. Meanwhile, Britain is still maintaining a presence at a military base on the Chagos Archipelago’s Diego Garcia island as part of the 2024 agreement.

Britain isn’t the first or last culture with enough global territory to qualify for the “sun never sets” moniker. Similar, solar-based expansionist sentiments date as far back as the Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Persian, and Roman empires. The phrase “the empire on which the sun never sets” was first used in reference to the Spanish empire under the 16th century Hapsburg reign of King Charles I, also known as Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire. Beginning in the 20th century, similar titles were frequently used to describe the United States. If nothing else, empires may rise and fall, but the sun will outlast them all—at least for about another 5 billion years.

Without an empire, Britain is just a rainy little island gradually getting overrun by Pakis and niggers. It's of no international importance whatsoever.

Meanwhile in reality-land the deal still hasn't even been signed and it's stuck in diplomatic hell thanks to the Americans, and some parliamentarians who have launched challenges for a legal review which could take YEARS, the BIOT will still remain British for the time being.

Sad for the British but their "empire" has been decline ever since World War 2 ended.
British Empire was mostly made of places that were "3rd World" or lacking native civilization, at largest extent? It'd be more impressive if they managed to conquer Europe.

And with the way it's going in the UK, how long until British Empire ends there? Very ironic that the government there seems to be deliberately ending their own country ...

They're defiantly speed-running to literally piss off every person in this country, it took them six months to do what took the Tories fourteen years, even hardcore generational Labour voters who always voted red no matter what are starting to get uppity and that's defiantly saying something.

It's probably gonna result in an uprising, but I honestly can't say what could cause it, everyone says the UK is cucked (and they have a point), but then Southport happened and those riots came out of nowhere, so maybe something bigger will happen, but it's gonna come right out of left-field imo.

I've held out from logging on to shit post in so long, but I can't help but pop that cherry when it comes to thumbing my nose at the dysgenic british scum.

Your empire has fallen and it was all self inflicted, good riddance, I can't wait for you all to be behind the european digital iron curtain. My threads will be ever cleaner without your tea sipping salt flooding my ears and eyes.

Ok, it is now or never,

Argentinians; Falklands War 2: Electric Boogaloo!

Spaniards: ¡Gibraltar Reconquista!

Or you know, just ask the UK government to hand them over, claim some historical grievances and how you where victimized by ye olde mean British Empire just like Mauritius did, Easy peasy limey squeezy.
its the UK my dawg, some brownskin with a quran in his hand can show up at 10 downing street and walk in without knocking and hold the whole country hostage

Id rather have Liberia run both Gibraltar and Falklands (though preferably the country's they are attached to you tea drinking mongs) than those sarcastic, freedom hating, crown licking dirty British run anything other than and AIDS 5K an even then id let the Liberians supervise, you know experience and all that.

It wasn't the finances that doom them as it was the hit to their manpower pool which did them in. Moreso the returning PTSD ridden English and colonial veterans failed to even bothering to serve their "crown and country" by replenishing the ranks. I.e not knocking up every English and colonial ho after coming home. Coupled with an unhealthily large percentage of their best and brightest having been turned into fertilizer.
Harems don't work in first world nations.

Been a long old while since I was in school, but we were never actually taught about the British ‘empire’. Bit weird for the 70s & 80s, but there you go.

Apparently back in the 1910s teaching about the empire was absolutely compulsory, and some teachers who were not British/pacifist/insert other conchie reasoning here refused to take part in whatever celebrations of empire day occurred. I have vague memories of reading about a beloved primary school teacher (an Irish woman) who refused to take part and was very nearly sacked for doing so. Only parental campaigns and other staff appealing for her job meant she stayed. Turns out the lassie was right all along, god rest her soul.

Mad to think how creative and practical Britain was during the Industrial Revolution and after. All the shit they built - that we mostly still use now - cos you could afford to build it back then. Vast expanses of roads, canals, railways, electricity generation, gas lines, housing, all the factories that built all the machines that drove our industry and filled our homes. And now we can’t afford the upkeep cos past governments kept putting it off and kicking the can down the road. And we sure as shit can’t afford to replace it.

Tl;dr empires are cool, but expensive and only a short-term shindig (plus they make everyone else mad). Stay home and look after your own.

DIDJA HEAR THAT MR STARMER? (pls no arrest for h8 speech it was just a joke I dindu nuffin)

I came to that sad conclusion recently, that the Brits would be better off under the Nazis than what they have now. The USA should never have gotten involved in that war. Defeating the Axis only enabled the Red Menace that we're still dealing with today.
FDR was a "please notice me Stalin sempai" closet communist and with him alive as POTUS, the USA was going to WWII to save Stalin. FDR made it a point to his media propagandists to obsuscate all of that. Although they didn't need any convincing as they too were all in on turning the United States into a communist hellhole.

Late and Gay! Britain has been a joke empire for the better part of a century. You don't even call it just England anymore, you've had to cuck to the hinterlands and call it United Kingdom.

Everybody is more interested in the United States' slow collapse. Marijuana is now legal in many states for recreational use despite being Federally Illegal. Certain states ignore the right to own a gun and defend your self. Ex: New York, Massachusetts, California ... If you could shackle a nigger in your back yard and sell him to a farmer then nobody would notice the 14 Amendment for all it does. It does fuck all. This trend will continue. In 50 years the US will look like Medieval Europe: a bunch of small despot countries where Rome used to have its boarders.
