All of your rumors are coming from the same source, an article in either FT or Forbes, I forget which. I don't put much stake in it anyways, its always smart to be at least a little bit panicked ahead of a huge product launch.
I know the plebs have been going on about muh single player, but take a look at something like Hogwarts Legacy, which made a shit ton of money. I don't know it has a ton of legs on it, but people still will buy a single player rpg, if the devs give them something they want.

I know that, but I also know someone IRL who will unironically shit on any game for not having a multiplayer component. Unfortunately I have to tolerate this person, but god damn the temptation to throat punch them is very real.
They are a metric that companies watch internally, even if they don't broadcast the numbers. If preorders are low, that's considered a bad portent for the game itself. Remember that most games will make the vast majority of their money in the first few weeks, when early adopters rush to buy them. Games that sell low during that period generally don't go on to sell well overall and get judged as failures, even if it sells over a long period of time. Part this is because, these days, games tend to get discounted relatively quickly, especially once it goes to PC, so those first weeks when the game is selling at full price is when its the most profitable.
I think the more likely explanation is that the PS5 just hasn't sold very well in Japan. In fact, it sells like shit in Japan. Japan is the Switch's territory, and if you want a game to make bank in Japan, you put it on the Switch, not the PS5. Even multiplats sell magnitudes more on Switch than they do on the PS5.
For sure. Like I said, the PS5's userbase just isn't very big. But Square's reputation among Japanese circles really is abysmal right now. Lots of complaints about how the Japanese audience feels abandoned by the Western pandering and whatnot.
True, but they did take a lot of inspiration from his work. I know they got a lot of people he worked with and the cutscene director for FF12.
I hope it does well. I cant imagine it not being a success in some manner when all the reviews come in. It's just that 90% of the time pre orders are worthless to get because the benefits are so tiny. They probably underestimate the value of the last min buyers like myself.
