The Simpsons Movie returns for sequel after two decades

The Simpsons Movie will return for a sequel 20 years after the original, 20th Century Studios and Disney confirmed on Monday.

Based on Fox's popular and long-running animated sitcom - which follows the lives of Homer, Marge and their three children, Bart, Lisa and Maggie - the as-yet untitled sequel is set to be released on 23 July 2027.

The first film, released in 2007, saw Homer accidentally pollute the water supply of Springfield and then attempt to save his family and city, which had been sealed off under a huge glass dome.

The poster for the new film, shared on various social media platforms, shows a doughnut being grabbed alongside the tagline: "Homer's coming back for seconds."

Excited fans posted in the comments underneath, with many satirising the show's opening credits to show images of Bart writing lines on a school blackboard, which read: "I will not wait 20 years to make another movie."

The Simpsons first appeared in 1987 as cartoon shorts on another US TV show, before getting their own one two years later.

Created by Matt Groening, it has now aired for 37 seasons. And it was recently renewed through to season 40, which will air in 2028/29.

The first movie, directed by David Silverman, grossed an estimated $536 million (£400m) at the global box office, and there had been rumours in the press of a sequel for years but nothing was confirmed until now.

Showrunner Matt Selman recently told Variety that streaming had helped the series not only remain relevant to older viewers but also gain new fans.

"Now, instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever," he said.

The Happy Gilmore sequel was passable, if a bit too overloaded in unnecessary cameos. Haven't seen the Spinal Tap sequel so I can't comment inbit. The Naked Gun sequel was fucking hilarious though.

The Simpsons first came out my Freshman year in College. I'm Fucking Retired Now! At this point the voice cast is older than Mr. Burns.

I know it's just a shitty animated sitcom, but it really drives me nuts that the simpsons characters haven't aged, especially considering how grounded it is in reality compared to a show like South Park. I saw an episode where 10 year old Bart was playing a switch, which is just fucking absurd to witness, he was 10 when the fucking Gameboy came out, he's in his goddamn 40s.

It is kind of bizarre for me to think about. The Simpsons has been around damn near the same amount of time that I have.

I played Simpsons games on the Nintendo NES. And now we're on the fucking Playstation 5.

The voice actors were mostly all in their early 20's to mid-30s. They're either dead or senior citizen grandparents now.

Canonically, Bart would be almost 50 years old by the time the new movie comes out. Almost 20 years older than Homer's age in the show.

While the show is multiple decades past its prime, I will admit that when it finally ends*, it'll be a bit bittersweet. I've never really known a time without The Simpsons being on air. It'll be a merciful ending.

*assuming that Fox doesn't keep it going until the heat death of the known universe.

I was born around the time the show started to decline in quality and I have only seen Simpsons merch a handful of times (and I live in a border state). Not entirely. Some new company just got the toy license last year. I think Jada toys. They can't keep them on the shelves at Walmart and Target. They're up to wave 8 or 9 already on the 4" action figures.

My predictions
- Donald Trump himself or a very ham-fisted Donald Trump-esque personality (possibly Mr Burns) will be the villain.
- Lisa will be the main protagonist who outwits evil chuds with her Liberal wit and brilliance.
- Right wingers will be portrayed as both evil and utterly incompetent retards.
- Homer and Bart will be all for Not-Trump at the start but after Not-Trump does something undeniably evil, they realize the error of their chuddy ways.
- The end of the movie will result with Not-Trump being imprisoned for some terrible crime and a female politician whom allied with Lisa will be sworn in as President, with the movie hinting that Lisa, too, will become a female president in the future.

Edit: one more prediction - There will be references to Epstein's list, Palestine, Russian puppet allegations, and of course, some immature dig like small hands/penis, balding, etc that will be used as a running gag throughout the whole movie.

They could just explain away the retcons as cloning replacement Homers, Barts,, Lisas, Marges and Maggies whenever the current set get too 'old.'

It won't be a popular idea but I think of you bite the bullet and get a new crop of voice actors you could make the Simpson's reliable 6-7/10 television again.

It's the definition of a average show.

The shows problems are far deeper than that. It's a satire of a world that no longer exists but still wants to be relevant.

To fix it you'd have to plow down to the foundations and start over. Maybe as an aw shucks wonder year like nostalgia

or far more interesting a reboot specifically designed for the modern age with characters who are the same but also radically redesigned. For example Homer, a chronically unemployed slacker with his infamous job hopping recontextualized far more relatable to the struggle of the typical underemployed under skilled workers of today than some dumb boomer who stumbled into a job good enough to support a whole family. Marge, the primary breadwinner. Burns would be a faux liberal tech CEO. Characters like Lovejoy, moe, bumblebee man, and Lyndsey naegle would fade into the background or rise with the massive cultural changes that taken place across 4 decades.

I think it's a very interesting idea but I doubt the writers have the chops to pull it off or navigate the backlash

This is pretty much me. I loved the Simpsons to death as a kid. My local TV station would play reruns for an hour every weekday when I was getting home from school. The last episode I remember watching when it was new was the episode where Homer was trying to fly a plane on some island with aborigines while screaming help me jebus on the radio. I remember my dad saying the show was going to shit. That has to be in the seasons 11-12 range. I looked up Marge's voice on youtube because people mentioning it in this thread, and holy shit she sounds like death.
