The Shin Megami Tensei/Persona Thread

Christ, if we’re going to talk about Atlus’ DLC practices let’s not forget the time they put it on a port of a PS2 game with Nocturne HD. They’ve been pushing this bullshit to ever increasing heights since Sega bought them.
Remember when you needed to buy a DLC to complete the post-game dungeon in IVA? It's a minor thing but probably one of my favorite instances of Atlus/Sega being greedy dicks with DLCs.

Funny how everyone loves to dogpile at the big guys (EA, WG, Activision) but other smaller yet more greedy fucks have gotten away with it by abusing their niche audience (Overkill, Creative Assembly, Atlus, Gaijin).
At least two of the "smaller" companies you mentioned (Atlus, Creative Assembly) are owned by Sega, one of the "Big guys".

remember the hole SMT X FIRE EMBLEM few years back? how people thought we would get SMT game that played just like fire emblem but instead, we got the weird Tokyo Mirage idol game no one asked for? well, it turns out there DOSE exist a SMT game that plays like fire emblem. only it came out 30 years earlier!

Majin Tenshin is like fire emblem with SMT characters with a small hint of advance wars cramped in. it makes me a bit sad we could have gotten something like this since the concept sounds pretty fucking cool by compression to Mirage.

after watching the video, i kinda miss how dark the SMT series used to be.

My god SMT was something beautiful before Atlus put too much eggs into Persona

You know what? I actually liked Tokyo Mirage Sessions. It scratched the SMT itch I’d been feeling, if only tangentially, and, unlike Persona 5, the combat could actually be challenging at points. Would I recommend it? No, not really. But if Persona is going to be the future of the franchise, it should at least demand as much of me as the idolshit spinoff that nobody really wanted did.

Anyway, speaking of Majin Tensei, I have an excuse to post a favourite of mine:

I'm playing it right now and I'm actually enjoying it.

So, I picked up P5R on sale sometime back and just now completed it. Incidentally, it was my first Persona game. Highly enjoyed it even if I was steamrolling it pretty easily. I didn't look up any guides except for which confidant I needed to focus to get to the DLC, but when I stumbled on the fact that I could just run around Mementos with Ryuji's insta-kill and trigger fusion alarms all day, I made some truly OP Personas.

I'm going to take a break from turn-based for a bit since that 120 hour playthrough sort of drained me, but after that I have the option between borrowing my bro's SMT 5 or playing P4G which I also grabbed for cheap. Thoughts?

go for P4G. SMT 5 is a mixed bag.

Appreciate the feedback.

This may have already been answered in the thread so I apologize for my shittiness, but in regards to the P3 remake, is it going to be like a definitive edition or will they release a P3 remake "Royal" down the line that I should wait for instead?

No P3 reloaded is going to be missing the post game dungeon/extra story stuff from FES as well as femc from P3P. It's just has the stuff from the original PS2 release so I would wait if you're going to buy it because there's probably going to be a definitive edition at some point. Altus can't release a Persona game only once after all.
