Hello, Indigo-Superego here. I’ve come to talk about something that’s been haunting me for a bit.
For the unaware, Rococo was a French art movement that died with the aristocracy in the revolution. A branch of it entered Russia, and the revolution there also tried to kill it. This movement, more than any other, was labeled as hedonistic by the leftists and swiftly rooted out wherever there was leftism.
I think it died.
I think there were successor movements that were targeted by leftists in the same way- art-nouveau, art-deco. These styles are labeled as ‘dishonest’- and always torn down for it. I think those leftists, the likes of adolf loos, should have been ripped apart limb from limb (in a painting).
Now AI illustration takes this same approach as the Rococo movement did- it ornaments and decorates its subjects endlessly. AI itself being a collection or a singularity of what artists desire and what is common I submit that fact as proof that the people want this style, deep in their collective soul.
I think that if this style is understood, perhaps humanity too can be understood. Therefore I start this thread, in hopes that we can dissect this and draw something from this dead movement.

Explaining Roko’s Basilisk, the Thought Experiment That Brought Elon Musk and Grimes Together (archive)
Before the couple—henceforth known as ‘grusk’— made their first public appearance together at the MET Gala on Monday, Musk tweeted what would have otherwise been yet another unremarkable dad joke on the billionaire’s timeline. The tweet read “Rococo’s Basilisk,” a play on words that mixes the name for an 18th century baroque art style (Rococo) with the name of an internet thought experiment about artificial intelligence known as ‘Roko’s Basilisk.’

Rococo is 'Good times create weak men': the art movement. Mostly soothing saccharine prettiness for the ultra decadent. Still there was enough innocent beauty and amazing craftsmanship on display for leftists to hate it for the wrong reasons.
I argue that it is irrational to say that ‘saccharine’ is a negative quality, and I also argue that the perception of Rococo as a decadent art movement is a total lie propagated by leftists.
My logic for the first claim is that something being saccharine does not preclude it from being meaningful or strong; in nature there are many things with a sweet appearance that stand out as particularly dangerous or disproportionately strong. Human art is an extension of nature’s art, and nature created the wasp, the nudibranch, the wildcat, the snake, the coral reef, and thousands upon thousands of colorful and fanciful beasts more.
My logic for the second claim is that Rococo is an art movement primarily focused on ornamentation and decoration and leisurely themes are an optional element that aren’t guaranteed to show up in Rococo (pic below as example). Therefore leisurely decadence can be trimmed away to irrelevance, a false lead in the algebra of evaluating an art movement’s core.
Rococo is just too overwrought, gaudy and distracting IMO. Prefer the cleaner styles of classical antiquity and Romanesque architecture.

Art Deco is great, though.
Fair, but I think you might like this though.

I get the impression Rococo is considered an art movement by virtue of evolving from and replacing Baroque art as fashionable; not for having new and profound ways to convey eternal truths like Baroque itself did,

I argue that it is irrational to say that ‘saccharine’ is a negative quality,
It was ment as an insult

...and then there was nothing of meaning left, just sprawling form over substance. You successfully baited me with the Fragonard pic tho

everyone stfu rococo is fucking great. its like looking into a dream n stuff

>AI

AI has a dream feeling but it feels too surrealist to really be rococo. more like fever dream than good dreams, know what i'm sayin? AI could be used for surreal horror, wasted potential

I took you more for a constructivist man

The sprawling form is itself the object of meaning IMO

Too gotti. The marble and ceiling painting on its own wouldn't be too bad. Hell of a bad time dust, I bet.
