I maintain the issue is the lack of transparency in moderation. They don't answer to anyone when it comes to their safety moderation decisions. They need some kind of oversight to make sure they're actually doing their jobs and effectively banning these predators. That's all that's required. Doesn't even need to be a government agency responsible for it. Just basically a third party security team whose books and practices are open to the public so people see what's really going on and aren't complaining to a moderation team that has no obligation to act. Literally could just pay people like Ruben to handle the issue as outsiders from the company and it's a done deal. But that probably requires some kind of regulatory law to put into place.

Compare Disney's attitude to Roblox's and it becomes quite clear where the difference lies. The point is, this shit is possible. Roblox want to spend neither the time nor the money required to make the platform safe. More than that even, they are simply too apathetic or too retarded to have cared about children's safety since very likely day one of development.

Toontown in particular had pretty good safeguarding in place. You had a (fairly comprehensive) set of preset phrases available to you that were more than adequate for any situation in the game. If you wanted free chat, you needed another user's friend code which was meant to limit free chat to people who already knew each other outside of the game.

Of course people found a way to get around it by jumping to indicate numbers and placing coloured furniture for letters, but the free chat still had extremely comprehensive filtering. Given that it pre-dated the more popular off platform chats I'd be surprised if there was even a whiff of a predator problem in the game.

Can't comment on the various revival projects that exist other than that they're both developed and enjoyed by age regressing troons and autists so I'd imagine grooming would be a concern - but I'm sure they have a maximum of about 300 regular players across all versions so who cares.

God I feel old but Toontown was goated as fuck, very simplistic in a lot of ways for a mmo. but it had a charm you couldn't get anywhere else.

They are not wrong. Even back in the day when Minecraft was most popular all the porn was hidden away on private servers. Roblox porn out in the open like in Second life. Minecraft grooming more of discord problem. Not the game itself.

Club Penguin required you to pay to access servers that allowed free chatting - non-members were restricted to a limited set of prebaked phrases and emotes. And if you grew up in the late 90s to 2000s, you know how parents were generally unwilling to consistently pay for subscriptions like that. The proliferation of subscription services in general has made parents less wary of shelling out money for their kids, which is why you now see these kids trading copious amounts of Robux and V-Bucks.
 
This story came to me via extremely normie channels, a fellow mom started explaining a somewhat garbled version of this in the GC and I thought “I bet the farms has the real story” and here we are.

Some non-online parents I know are pretty worked up about this.
