Opinion The rise of homonationalism - Why gay voters across Europe are flocking to the populist right.

Across Europe, gay voters are moving rightwards. Britain has not quite caught up yet, but it will. The only question is whether the Conservatives or Reform UK will be the ones to benefit.

I was reminded of this recently, while hosting a fundraiser for LGBT+ Conservatives at the Savile Club in London. Conservative MP Katie Lam was speaking, and she made a remark that would once have been uncontroversial, but now feels borderline taboo. LGBT rights, including same-sex marriage, she argued, are the product of particular cultures. Britain and the West built the legal and cultural framework that made LGBT equality possible. It did not happen by accident.

Around the same time, a video from France went viral. It shows a young, very camp man, wearing make-up and sporting truly impressive eyebrows, being approached by a Muslim influencer who offers him cash to say ‘salam aleykoum’ – or ‘peace be upon you’ – on camera. The young man recoils and snaps back: ‘No. We’re in France here.’ It showed a refusal to play along. An assertion of cultural confidence. No apology offered.

His reaction felt like part of a trend that’s been building for some time in France. Last year, Nicolas Scheffer of Têtu – France’s biggest LGBT magazine – reported that of all the parties represented in the National Assembly, it was the hard-right National Rally that sent the largest number of openly gay MPs to parliament in 2022. By cross-referencing public sources, between 20 and 25 of National Rally’s 89 MPs are believed to be gay.

Spain offers an even more explicit example. Natalie Donback, a reporter at Coda, describes the rise of Carlitos de España – a gay YouTuber originally from Bolivia and now based in Barcelona’s Eixample district. ‘Islam keeps me up at night’, he says. ‘They want me dead.’ Along with other influencers, Carlitos helped form Las Marifachas, a deliberately provocative group whose name fuses a slur for gay men with a slur for fascists. Alongside InfoVlogger, a YouTuber, and Madame in Spain, a drag queen from Alicante, they have built a bridge between parts of Spain’s LGBT community and the radical-right Vox party. Their content is not polite. It is not sanitised. Yet it expresses real fears.

Germany offers perhaps the sharpest data point of all. The leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, is a lesbian woman in a long-term civil partnership with a Sri Lankan – a fact that causes some progressives to short-circuit. A poll of over 60,000 users of gay-dating app Romeo found the AfD to be the most popular party among respondents, with nearly 28 per cent support. The Greens followed on around 20 per cent. The centre-left SPD trailed on just 12.5 per cent. The gay vote, if there is such a thing, is clearly not wedded to the kinds of left-wing parties that we might once have expected it to be.

This trend has acquired a name: homonationalism. Progressive politics has spent years insisting that all cultures are equal, that borders barely matter, and that any concern about immigration is morally suspect. In doing so, it has refused to confront a basic reality. Attitudes to homosexuality vary dramatically across the world, and large numbers of migrants to Europe come from countries that remain deeply hostile to gay people.

Britain’s gay community knows this better than most. In 2020, three gay men, James Furlong, David Wails and Joe Ritchie-Bennett, were murdered in Reading, in what prosecutors described as an act of religious jihad by Libyan refugee Khairi Saadallah. The killer was known to have made homophobic comments to friends and had said that gay people were not accepted in Libya.

Anecdotally, it is clear that the traditional alliance between the gay community and parties in favour of mass immigration is beginning to crumble. Among my own gay friends, more and more are now openly right-wing. Some say, quite casually, that they support Reform. A decade ago that would have caused a scene. Now it barely causes a pause in conversation.

Which brings us to Britain. When homonationalism takes root here, who benefits?

The Conservative Party should, in theory, be well placed. It boasts a powerful LGBT wing, led by rising star Luke Robert Black, and a cadre of openly gay MPs. Unlike the left, it is capable of articulating the risks posed by mass migration from societies where gay rights do not exist. It also legalised same-sex marriage when it was last in office.

Reform, by contrast, has no obvious LGBT wing at all. But it offers something far more valuable in the current moment: clarity. On borders, sovereignty and national identity, Reform speaks plainly, without embarrassment and without apology. For gay voters who believe cultural cohesion underpins personal freedom, that kind of clarity is hard to ignore. I hear that some of the most popular figures at Reform’s party conferences have been gay icons in the right-wing media, alongside Reform’s own chairman, former TV medic David Bull.

The risk for the Conservatives is complacency. Assuming right-leaning gay voters are banked because of past achievements is a mistake. Homonationalism is not about nostalgia, or gratitude for same-sex marriage. It is about the present, and about a growing sense that polite society is unwilling to defend the conditions that made LGBT freedom possible in the first place.

Make no mistake, homonationalism is coming to Britain. The question is not if or when, but which party of the right stands to gain from it.

American gays who supported MAGA and christchuddies are on the clopping block for instance, they're just too stupid to realize it.
Yes this is what all those Minnesota learning centers are actually for. They're mass reprogramming MAGA gays and those who fail to conform to the new MAGA normal end up butchered and fed to the cannibalistic Somalians. This all began after the executive order to end gay marriage and it's only going to get worse when Trump doubles down before the midterms and has RFK ban PrEP.

The marriage between right wing politics and homosexuality has always been well known. What is also well known is that those very same homosexuals end up being purged and killed once "their" side seizes power. It's a kind of retard cycle. American gays who supported MAGA and christchuddies are on the clopping block for instance, they're just too stupid to realize it.
Stalin, Mao, and Castro all hated fags.

You need a touch-up on your worldview.
in what universe is homosexual degeneracy part of any conservative agenda?
Gays flocking to the right is not the same as the right flocking to gays.

And 'conservatism' is not the only right wing political position. Stalin was pretty fucking "conservative" in some respects, Mao was transgressive, etc.

this really is the dumbest timeline. I understand that populist parties that are still struggling for power want to build coalitions, but in what universe is homosexual degeneracy part of any conservative agenda? immigration is far from the only problem the western world is facing. another equally vicious head on the globohomo hydra is the social decay caused by extreme sexual liberalism and gender ideology. gay culture exists upstream of shit like nonbinary/trans culture, democratic party politics, not to mention the increasingly mainstream presence of pedophilia which is at least partially centered in the queer community. this shit where gays are acting like they're the normal ones in the face of the derangement of modern culture is absolutely heinous, the gay community has long been one of the primary forces that brought us to this point. the entire point of a conservative political movement is to act as a countervailing force against all the "progressive"-minded retards who want to tear down tradition just for rebellion's sake. well, we have waged a war to redefine gender and sexuality on their behalf and look where it's brought us. if you oppose unchecked immigration on the principle that it allows people who are uninvested in your country to damage its social fabric and change its culture for the worse, then you must also oppose queer culture for the exact same reason. I think a lot of these people, the smart ones at least, see which way the wind is blowing, and are trying to sneak onto the bus early to protect themselves.
There is a time where ceding your core values to your enemies to try to make an unstable coalition is simply no longer tenable, though I would argue that happened quite some time ago. I also understand pragmatism, but when your pragmatism leads to you supporting the very same enemy who caused the problems you are trying to address in the first place, then what is really the point? It's not like fags can throw their lot in with Muslims or their sycophants without eventually ending up executed for it, so I do not see any reason we would need to suck up to fags in any capacity. Even if we force them back in the closet, that's still supremely preferable to being ripped apart by a pack of sand niggers, so if they are really being motivated by self-preservation then there would be no need to placate homos.

Ultimately, the core issue is that "conservatives" have no principles, and thus, ultimately end up "conserving" their supposed opponents' victories. Progressive won the fag fight a decade and a half ago, therefore, conservatives now want to "conserve" faggot victories. This is why I class myself as a reactionary, as I very much do not want to be lumped in with these retards who only concern themselves with some of the symptoms, rather than addressing root causes.

I like your post but by definition the conservatives you're describing are acting in a reactionary manner, in that they are conserving what has been accomplished as a reaction to further transgressive sliding of the Overton window.

In reality the word people are pining for that isn't 'conservative' is somewhere among terms like 'traditionalist' or 'moral realist'.

This is pretty simple, if the muzzies gain power the homosexuals will get at best discriminated against and at worst thrown off of buildings. I don't think they can ignore anymore the fact is these orcs and uruk hai will be diametrically opposed to them. Bringing in more is only increasing that risk.

That and from an outside perspective these new "far right" parties are simply anyone who wants to stop migration, opinions and stances differ from party to party with the single shared demand, stop bringing in more browns

conservative means conserving institutions

a revolutionary is by definition not a conservative

leftwing revolutionaries being against sexual degeneracy doesn't make them conservatives

A revolutionary by that definition isn't a conservative, sure.

That does not mean they can not have conservative opinions or positions.

And if we're going to play the 'state definitions used by _ as objective points of view' game, I'll remind you that this game just ends in everyone pissed off and walking away with their subjective viewpoint anyhow.

Modern political parlance isn't the only reason such positions are called conservative, either, as Theodore Roosevelt was in his day considered a progressive for much the same reasons progressives today are called as such.

So, yeah, if we're going to talk about leftwing revolutionaries who are revolutionary against the system they are revolting in order to overthrow, which is the correct and specific context in which they are revolutionary, then it is fair to speak of them when they are acting (or of opinions) that are the opposite of a progressive standpoint, which would be conservative in nature. Unless you're going to tell me with a straight face that you believe the opposite of progressivism is not conservatism which would be a rather odd thing to say.

There's not really any reason to try and keep Stalin a one-dimensional cartoon character. The guy hated degenerates, in his own words. That is an unabashedly conservative position if you want to use political parlance that dates at least to T.R.'s day.

And yes, conservatism isn't the only right-wing position. Just like socialism isn't the only left-wing position, or progressivism, or whatever-else. There are right-wing socialists, left-wing nationalists, right-wing globalists (yes really), and so on.

rightwing and leftwing have to do with attitudes towards the pre-revolutionary state. They come from where people sat in the national assembly after the french revolution.

conservative is also a word that exists because of the french revolution. it was used before Burke but it's Burke's analysis of the horrors unleashed by revolution that created the concept.

it is absolutely true that these words have accrued all kinds of other associations and are used in a super loosey goosey fashion but you're going to think in a loosey goosey way if you don't define your terms.

if you can call a literal revolutionary like Mao a conservative you're just not using language in a way that is going to lead to any kind of understanding.

Honestly I think right-wing gays prefer liberalism in its 1990s-2000s era where their victories had been won but before rampant troonism and hostile demographic change.

But liberalism dissolves all under the guise of personal choice, and like what some have said- liberalism to progressivism is like dusk to night- you cannot stop its natural conclusion.
Tbf, you'd probably now be considered a moderate or a liberal conservative, if you support something roughly equivalent to 1990s or 2000s liberalism.

I also understand pragmatism, but when your pragmatism leads to you supporting the very same enemy who caused the problems you are trying to address in the first place, then what is really the point?
Because people are not static. Especially with age, people sometimes grow to realize their enemy had a point. We were all told by the government that everyone but our in-group hates us and wants us dead.

Showing mercy and grace to those who admit the error of their ways will encourage others to do it too. That doesn't mean you race them into the inner circle of trust, but getting back to mutual tolerance and "agree to disagree" in this country would be nice.

A voot is a voot, silly. It's in the interest of gays to voot for parties that don't like dune coons. It's in the interest of parties that don't like dune coons to get voots wherever they can. Homo degeneracy is a bad flu. Islam is terminal cancer. Homo degeneracy can be pushed back against successfully without violence. Once the dune coons are in charge, the only choice to get them out of power is civil war

I wonder how many are now agreeing with the argument of gay marriage being a slippery slope and are taking responsibility for this?
Probably not many. Things seriously took a nose dive the moment that gay marriage was legalized--a huge catalyst.

Individual rights are the core of homosexuality's tolerance, which were pioneered in western countries. Anywhere super brown, like Africa/Middle East, they'll just kill you because that's their base reaction to everything. Asian countries are so obsessed with face that anything out of lockstep will be clamped down on. Not being a white nationalist if you're gay is suicidal.

People act like gays hating Muslims is new but it's not. When all the media is policed by leftist agendas and all you see is the progessive public sex fags and the protest fags, of course people would be shocked to see there are gays that don't have dick ,and rainbows and PreP and pedophilia on the brain 24/7.

Ones that support nationalism, fiscal conservatism and religious values have just gotten louder about it since the browns and trannies have been shoved down our throats. It's broken people who latched onto supporting that nosnsense after the marriage quandry was settled, and sadly there's a lot of loud, broken people in the LGB. Throw out the bad apples (and the browns) but not the bushel.

Not sure what “T” is worried about, they’re conducting their own gay and especially lesbian genocide another reason really for normal sodomites to vote to remove kebab and troon.

it does make them social conservatives in this context.
yes that includes stuff like lenin wanting to outlaw prostitution and stalins ussr being anti fag. they were still radical revolutionaries when it comes to political and economic concerns, and in many social concerns as well (anti monarchy, anti religion, anti nationalism, pro class struggle) but on topics like sexual deviancy they were social conservatives, in stark contrast to their western liberal leftist counterparts who advocated (and practiced) liberalism and hedonism on those topics.

All the rest of these faggots are posers. I regularly called brown guys sexting me on Grindr NIGGERS in the 2000s. You don't get to vote for sand niggers coming into our country and then suddenly turn around and play conservative later on. If you really want to make amemds then fed post and call for curb-stomping EU politicians otherwise fuck off, you had your chance to choose the right side.

I think they also kind of preferred the insular community they used to have. Trannies and spicy straights invading is annoying, but that's only part of the problem. Wider acceptance means their gay ghettos are no longer necessary, but, without them, they can wind up feeling very alone and isolated.
