OSS 117: From Africa with Love (2021)

These films are a revival of an older film series from the 50s and 60s (and early 70s).

However I have just recently found some of them available via torrents, namely the 5 seen below, one of which is only available in Italian despite being a French movie, and I haven't gotten around to watching any of them yet so I cannot vouch for/recommend them like I can with the recent ones. You don't need to know anything about the old movies to enjoy the newer ones.

Anyway, if you like parodies or spy movies and you don't mind reading subtitles (or speak French) these are a real hidden gem that no one talks about because of the language barrier.
 
The first two of the Dujardin ones are brilliant, the third not so (the original writer and director wasn't interested in doing it, and the people eventually hired didn't get it). The earlier ones are just standard 60s eurospy fare played straight.

If you like Dujardin, check him out in Brice de Nice, or if you can find it with subs his TV series "Un Gars, Une Fille".

Now that I think about it you're right, the third film was missing that je ne sais quoi the first two captured. It was almost like a parody of itself that didn't land. I did like the way they had him shoot though, I keep meaning to make a good clip of it for meme purposes. Otherwise the whole rivalry subplot felt forced and the setting wasn't as fun as the first two. Despite that it's still better than 90% of what Hollywood shits out these days, and if you've watched the first two and want more of Dujardin in that role, it will suffice. Sounds like we shouldn't be expecting a 4th though.

I know but in this case it's an important element of the humor. The main character is extremely French and it's played for laughs.
 
Jean Dujardin was pretty good, man. As mundane as it was i can't help but kinda like Un Gars Une Fille. Always ended up on TV when i was younger
 
Only seen the first two revival ones, I thought they were good fun.

There was a quote from the lead actor that was quite witty, I think he was asked in an interview what worked best for playing the character, his response (in French) being something like "A little bit of Sean, a lot of Connerie" - Connerie being something like "very stupid" in French.
