One of the most fascinating demographic stats you might not have seen anywhere is this:
Among all white people currently alive in the United States, a full 60-70% trace their lineage to persons who arrived in the United States after 1870, mostly during the great immigration era of 1870-1924, About 30 million Europeans entered the U.S. during this time. This included especially Irish, Poles, Jews, Germans, and Scandinavians. Millions more arrived from 1925-1965, especially from Eastern and Western Europe. Most of their descendants are what the average person would consider to be "white"
Most of these immigrants experienced significant discrimination in areas like housing and employment. They didn't have it as bad as the slaves did, but they didn't especially have it much better than black Americans did at the turn of the 20th century. This point is not germane to my point about demographics, but it ought to be acknowledged anyway.
The left has been using the term "the original sin" to refer to slavery, and they literally hold all white people accountable as sinners. The left does not differentiate between slave owners and abolitionists, or Northerners and Southerners. All white people share the original sin, since all white people benefited from slavery. This is how the dogma goes.
I don't know about you, by my great great grandparents were picking potatoes in Ireland when the U.S. Civil War ended. They had nothing to do with slavery, and they came from an oppressed country that was very vocally abolitionist. There was no generational wealth in our family for several generations (and there ain't much now, tbh); my grandfather was a delivery truck driver. 60-70% of white people have similar stories of humble beginnings far from the United States well after the end of slavery. Only 30-40% of white people have slavery-era American ancestors. Most of them were non-slaveholders and some of them were abolitionist. Eventually a war was fought, primarily by white people, that put a decisive end to slavery. And even those with slave-owning ancestors are not guilty of owning slaves now.
So when lefties get into debates and start throwing around reparations and original sin and the demonic white man, why not toss this stat in their face? They'll pretend not to hear you, but to anyone else within earshot, you may score a point.
Just an idle thought.
