I think Chuck Norris jokes were my first introduction to memes on the early internet. I also learned about Rick rolling shortly after.
I'm not sure it counted as a meme but I remember these viral videos on YouTube called Muffins, and one about a character named Kelly that loves shoes. Those were the first YouTube videos I watched as a kid messing around with my friends on a parents' computer. Reminds me of a simpler time.

Hamster Dance, that dancing baby and chain emails are the ones I remember best. Google was also a meme back in the late 90s because it was such an amazing new search engine, and I imagine most people here remember the days when you had to be invited to Gmail. I can't remember anything from the old Prodigy BBS sites or AoL. Might be some really old-school posters from the Usenet days but that was before my time.
Does anyone else remember those porn sites that were camouflaged as legitimate websites? The infamous Whitehouse.com comes to mind, as does Historysearch.com, one I got tricked into visiting in school back in 5th grade. I have to admit I didn't mind being "tricked" like that at the time.

The "OMG shoes!" video was definitely one of the earliest viral videos I saw, it's one of those things that don't feel like it should be so long ago.
There's such a distinct charm to pre-YouTube viral videos.
For one thing memes/viral videos used to be a lot more infrequent, which made them more special, today every month there's a new meme that feels stale after just a few weeks.
The GI Joe PSAs were also some of the earlier memes I heard of, Electronic Gaming Monthly had a blurb about them in a 2003 issue, I remember how cool it was to finally watch them in 2006.
What's creepy is some of those were weren't meant to fool kids, like misspelling "Disney.com", what was up with that?
