49ers Mourn Passing of Aldon Smith

Jun 13, 2026 at 04:35 PM

Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith passed away today at the age of 36.
Statement from San Francisco 49ers:
"We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith. Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon."
Smith was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers as the seventh overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft. During his career with the 49ers, he appeared in 50 games (30 starts) and registered 152 tackles, 44.0 sacks, five passes defensed, five forced fumbles, one interception and one fumble recovery. Smith also appeared in eight postseason contests (six starts) and totaled 20 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
As a rookie in 2011, Smith registered a team-high 14.0 sacks, the second-most by a rookie in a single season in NFL history (since sacks became an official statistic in 1982). A First-Team Associated Press All-Pro in 2012 and 2013 Pro Bowl selection, Smith's 19.5 sacks as a second-year player are the most in a single season in 49ers franchise history. His 33.5 sacks through his first two seasons (2011-12) are the most by any player in their first two seasons.

Born Aldon Jacarus Smith on September, 25, 1989, he attended the University of Missouri where he was a First-Team All-Big 12 selection and the recipient of Missouri's Defensive Lineman of the Year Award in 2010.
No cause of death in the 49ers statement or in a few articles I checked. Unfortunately that often means suicide/OD especially for a healthy 36 year old with substance abuse issues.
RIP
Someone on twitter pointed out he had 42 sacks in his first 43 starts which is pretty crazy.

One of the most notable and depressing stories of wasted potential in NFL history. Could have been a hall of famer or damn close to it if his vices didn't overtake him so quickly in his career.

Alcohol really makes you spiral down to lows you will never think of if you don't moderate yourself. Aldon will forever serve as a warning story for that exact scenario, and his death was just the ultimate culmination of that tragedy. RIP.

Dude took 4 years off of football and came back with Dallas posting respectable starter stats, it's insane to think of what his ceiling might've been if he'd taken the help he was offered early.

Per Pete Thamel, Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby (infamous for betting on his own team) plans to enter the supplemental draft after massive backlash following his court injunction

Buddy placed upwards of 9,000 bets, wagering at least $90,000 in total, including unders on his own team during his time benchwarming at IU. Who would even pick up such a liability? Wonder if TT pushed him out after they pariah'd themselves for him
Dude's betting on himself again

Who would even pick up such a liability?
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we have some very, very stupid people who own or run NFL Teams. That of course assumes that he has sufficient amounts of high end talent to overshadow “personality concerns”

At absolute best he makes a practice squad for a team that’s already dedicated to Tanking.

I mean, from the team's perspective, he's a cheap flier for a potential backup/camp body. They aren't the ones paying if he keeps getting in trouble illegally betting on his games. They actually get to pay him less in that instance. The chance for negative PR is minimal. "He told us he had learned his lesson and reformed. We're happy to have given him a second chance. We're sad he didn't take advantage of the opportunity given to him. He's no longer on the team". An elementary schooler could write the press release if he gets caught up to his old tricks.
Really, the league overall has more incentive to give this guy the Pete Rose treatment than any single team. I'm surprised they're letting him into the supplemental draft.

Wait, what supplemental draft? First time I hear of it
It's for players who lost college eligibility after the main draft often for academic or disciplinary reasons. There might be other edge cases. I never really paid much attention to it. It's conducted in an entirely different format as well.

Most notably Chris Carter, Josh Gordon, and Bernie Kosar were all supplemental draft picks (technically Steve Young and Reggie White too., but theyre from the USFL supplemental draft).
Cris Carter/Josh Cordon really are the yin-yang of what you could expect from taking a high ceiling guy with character concerns in the supplemental draft lmao

Yeah it's a blind bidding system where you use next year's draft pick. Kinda fun.

I don't think they've approved it yet, and they might not considering the NFL probably does not want this particular headache.

He's doing the Art Schlichter career arc I see.
