The long awaited EarthBound Beginnings Remake romhack is now available after almost 2 decades in development

I really really hate the official name "Earthbound Beginnings" that Nintendo gave Mother 1 when they dumped the rom on Virtual Console. The fanbase called it Earthbound Zero for years, and even if they didn't want to use that one they could've just called it "Earthbound Origins" or some shit

Or you know, just call it Mother. The only people that are gonna play it already know what the series is at this point

Ok.

Hey @skykiii you like retro games and stuff. Make this barren thread come to life.
So first of all I agree with @winterfag about Nintendo's choice of name.

Especially as it always reminds me of Metroid Beginnings.

Second, you know what? We're only 19 days away from the Fourth of July. What say we screw this Mother stuff and discuss a game that is far more Patriotic?

(I mean, I like Earthbound and all, tho unfortunately I never got far into either Zero or Mother 3).

Wow, I remember hearing about this years ago. Never thought it'd get finished.

I'm really liking it so far. Got as far as rescuing Pippi and gaining some levels outside the zoo. The music's a bit quiet compared to the sound effects.
There are some map changes: the overworld is no longer one continuous map, and the graveyard has been rearranged so old players won't know exactly where to go.
Most of the gameplay changes so far have been pretty reasonable (enemies you can avoid before fighting, the addition of low-tier defensive equipment), but something that annoyed me was that the ghosts in the graveyard can now possess you, which is pretty debilitating when you only have one character.

Unless it completely falls apart later, I'll play through the whole thing and give my thoughts afterward.

A lot of the work was by a solo developer through the 2010s. Very low level, he used a hex editor and didn't share the details. Then he disappeared. A lot of people have waited a really long time for this to come out.

I’m cautiously optimistic that the literal trannies behind the latest iteration of this hack didn’t shove anything in, but we’ll see.

I’m gonna say both of those are worse, honestly. Cringe, even.

Origins is frankly overused as a prequel/first game name, to the point plenty of people have dunked on using it in the past. Rayman Origins, Arkham Origins, Dragon Age Origins, Silent Hill Origins, AC Origins, Final Fantasy Origins. Origins ain’t original, okay?

Zero is slightly less overbearing, but tends to be used for prequels released after the first game if it shows up. It also raises questions about numbering if the series continues; If Mother 1 is Earthbound Zero, Mother 3 is Earthbound 2, and that’s just a mess nobody really needs.

And both convey a somewhat serious or at least trying-to-be-cool vibe. Emphasis on trying. If someone in the early 2000s showed me the earthbound series and told me the first game should be called Earthbound Zero I’d wedgie him and lock it in over his shoulders with the suspenders I know he’s wearing.

Mother 1 has a much lighter and wackier side of it, so the Beginnings can serve the same purpose as origins without leaning into the cringe overbearing name. And we don’t get a misalignment in game numbers from one country to another.

I finished playing this. Overall, it's very good.

Most of the convenient features from Mother 2 are added, including Magic Butterflies and Escargo Express. Some enemies are added for more variety, along with a lot of new items. There are also balance changes; notably, Dimension Slip is more expensive.

Each town now has its own music. This is a bit of a downgrade for Merrysville, where Bein' Friends plays even before you meet Lloyd. Reindeer and Spookane get major makeovers, with new music, new visuals, and extra details that really bring them to life. Interiors all over the game have a lot of extra furniture and decoration. In general, the music and visuals are quite good, with only one or two disappointing tracks.

As far as censorship, it's a bit inconsistent. Teddy's knife and Shroudley's blood are here, but cigarettes and the gang zombies' blood are absent. I didn't see the slightest hint of modern insanity in the text. There are a few new lines (mostly for knocking on doors), but they fit in well.

I highly recommend this remake to anyone who loves the original. It has revitalized my love of this game, its story and its music. For anyone who enjoyed EarthBound but couldn't get past the Famicom clunkiness of Mother 1, I recommend giving the remake a try; it addresses just about every possible complaint about the original.

I am going to check this out or at least the original Mother with a reduced encounter rate. Mother had one of the most annoying encounter rates that I couldn't handle.
