Yes. Sure, if you want a gaymen distro with all the bells and whistles included to pick and choose from, Garuda seems to be vouched for pretty often. Other than that, it really doesn't matter what distro you go for in the end as long as the hardware's good for it. Things like Steam are fairly plug-and-play already.

I'd also personally suggest using the Linux Zen kernel since that one seems to be much better optimised for performance in workflows like gaming. There are a couple of other alternative custom kernels as well like -lqx and -ck which may or may not even be better, but I'm only familiar with -zen firsthand since that one was readily available on Arch's repos - and hence any other derivative distros like what I use.

Systemd fuckery would be my guess (I've had issues in the past where it's waiting for some network-congested process to finish with a timeout of several minutes, it's absurd).

You can diagnose this stuff if you're feeling in an autistic enough mood. Your GRUB config (/etc/default/grub) probably has a line like:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="... quiet splash ..."
So remove the quiet so that it tells you exactly what's going on, and remove the splash so that it doesn't show the Kubuntu splash screen instead, and it might give you some more information to work with.

ETA: Don't forget to force the updated GRUB config changes through with sudo update-grub, if you decide to do this investigating.

Removed the entire line but forgot to force the config changes. On shutdown the kubuntu logo stayed up for 10 minutes. I'm just going to drop the whole thing and find another distro.

I'd agree with you if all this random nonsense didn't make me paranoid on a hardware level, and with this joke of a market I have to take care of what I have.

It's a Plasma thing. It saves the desktop state before each shutdown and does some other stuff so it takes ridiculously long. Another reason why I moved away from it. Other DE don't have this issue. You could try turning off the save desktop state and see if it improves.

I fell in love with Plasma at first. I really enjoy it but every time I boot up Kubuntu something seems to break. This previous time it booted it seemed to forget my display setup and reversed my monitors.

When I put Mint on my spare rig it was a nightmare to get the drivers for my GPU to work right. On Manjaro I dealt with strange slowdowns just when opening windows.

I'm looking for distro recommendations again. Not really interested in Pop with that weird GNOME setup. I'm considering going back to Mint but not a big fan of the limited scaling setup. I use a 1440p and 1080p monitor so finding something that can let you setup scaling on a per monitor basis would be cool. Currently looking at Endeavor or Zorin

Yeah I had the same things, and for the life of me I could never get the refresh rate to stay where it was, or up to what my monitor supported. My mouse movement always looked choppy and gross, and was super distracting. On Zorin it all just worked out of the box, even multiple refresh rates on different monitors at once works fine.

When you first boot, it will ask you if you want "modern graphics drivers". That means the proprietary nvidia ones. Some people have a stick up their ass about that but I'm not really bothered by it. Especially since the open source ones have been such shit.

I'm using KDE neon for my dev machine and I don't have that issue. I suspect, in this case, it's more likely something to do with kubuntu specifically, rather than plasma generally. My previous experienced with kubuntu have been similarly crap.
 
Question for you folks running Linux on laptops: a Lenovo I was given comes with the (now known to me) piece-of-shit Realtek 8822CE WiFi adapter, and for some damn reason the drivers that come with the latest distros won't work. I've already done some research and while trying this modded driver for it, it still won't work.

I've already blacklisted all the wifi-related drivers that come with the distro (right now I am testing this on Ubuntu 21.10) as instructed on that repo, but still no dice. And I have already scoured the net for other potential solutions, but none worked. Anyone else has had this issue? I am close to running out of ideas here.

Interesting, I guess it is a Kubuntu specific implementation of Plasma. I concur with the overall experience with Kubuntu.

If Linus and Yvonne cared about their children, they wouldn't have hired a "caretaker" to raise them. They would make sure one of them was at home when their children arrived home from school.

He could afford to invest $225k in Framework Laptop, but he or his wife couldn't be bothered to spend time raising their own kids. Neither of them would be home when their kids came back from school.

According to the orignally posted "Why Linus is Cutting Back From Work" video, it was this crazy situation where the kids where just getting home right as they were at the vet because the cat had passed away. Linus absolutely wouldn't lie and shift the time frame an hour or two to prevent people from figuring out his son killed the cat.

Linus is internet famous so he and Yvonne couldn't be neglectful parents. He literally says that "If I was there taking care of my kids, my furry kid would be there too." What a lying sack of shit. If he was home he'd be ignoring his kids so he could work on the masterpiece that is LTT.

His "solution" is for he and Yvonne to take "80% days" and each spend 1 fucking day a week with their kids.

That begs the question of 80% of what? Does that mean one of them will be there to eat dinner with their kids? Arrive just in time to tuck them into bed? He's lying by omission, because the truth would expose him for being a piece of shit.

Through the entire clip, Linus displays ZERO EMOTION. He doesn't give a fuck about the cat. He only cares because the situation is an inconvenience to him.

Let's be honest, instead of raising their own children they hired a surrogate single mother to "raise" their children. That's a textbook situation where you would expect a child to be completely fucked up. The kid was pissed his parents hate him and he took it out on the cat for attention. Blaming it on the "caretaker" is a bullshit cop out by a couple of neglectful parents.

I swear by Ubuntu LTS these days. Back in the day I was heavily into ricing and distro-hopping and configuration and all that fun shit, but times change and I'm absolutely fed up with it now. But I'm just an old fuddy.

(I've also never used or even looked into Pop, and as far as I'm concerned it's some newfangled rock-and-roll devilry that you young'ins can keep to yourselves along with your Discord and your Tinder and your meth-fueled tranny orgies.)

Oh no, I've already understood for awhile that he's a terrible absentee parent. I just don't automatically believe the kid killed the cat because "it could've happened you know!"
