I fucking despise Thunderbolt and USB-C with a burning passion. This brittle piece of shit should not be the sole charging port for ANY device larger than a phone, every laptop should come with a barrel jack instead of this trash. Over the course of owning a T480 for the last year, I have regularly been gifted with frothing rage because of the horrors of Alpine Ridge, it SUCKS, it BREAKS, it looks like SHIT, FUCK IT.
I miss Apple's old magnetic chargers. Ideally laptops should have two charging ports, one USB-C (it's convenient to have an interchangeable standard, and to be able to charge from any phone charger while traveling) and one magsafe3.

In this economy? I guess I'm never touching Windows again. Sucks for the two games I'm interesting in playing and I can't be fucked with dual booting because every fucking time I do it there's an issue that crops up 3 years in where I fuck over either the Windows partition or the Linux partition.

I would have 0 gripes with USB-C if they were not so prone to issues, at least in this generation of ThinkPads. Maybe it has gotten better since, I have no idea, and while having a standardized, interchangeable charger sounds excellent in theory, in my experience, older barrel jack or slim-tip chargers hold up infinitely better (for laptops at least).

Nah, you can do it on a single GPU but you basically have to fully log out of your Linux Desktop so the VM can take over the whole card. If your CPU has integrated graphics then that works better.

I just wished that there was a more proper connector, I had a laptop I was trying to use as a workstation and whenever it woke from sleep it wouldn’t detect one or two of the monitors unless you unplugged and replugged the dock
 
Minor joy when daily driving a Linux distro: DualShock 4 controllers are 100% plug and play. No need for some bullshit intermediary like DS4Windows.

Oh, you have Steam, correct? Steam provides the drivers now. In the past you would have to get ds4drv or an alternative.

Otherwise I agree. The solutions for these problems are more pleasant on Linux, mostly...
At this point there's only really rufus that I miss from Windows, but I might just load Windows on a shitbox laptop I have for straight emergencies. Once I figure out how to get a graphics card to run in a Windows virtual machine I'll literally never need to touch Windows ever again.

This is how I prevent emergencies:

1. Frequently back up all important data.
2. Install Linux on a separate disk (your shitbox).
3. Keep a bootable USB with linux handy for real emergencies.

Windows is not needed.
 
I will always hype up 8bitdo because the quality of modern video game controllers is atrocious and having something that feels nice to hold and isn't made of chinesium is pretty fucking good. They play well with Linux too but I haven't managed to get the driver software working properly so I have no idea if I'm being handicapped somehow.

8bitdo doesn't appeal to me because the price point is just shy of entering legit Xbox controller on sale territory. So do I want to wait for a Chinese manufactured controller that has variable shelf life despite the allegedly positive reviews praising dubious build quality? Or do I just drive over to Target, Walmart, Best Buy, or Staples and buy a $30 PowerA wired controller? I dunno man, gamepads nowadays feel like they're built to die and end up rotting away in an electronics recycling facility or a landfill. My rule of thumb is "if I'm seriously considering an off-brand controller and I'm not a mega sweatlord spending thousands of dollars for a custom built fightstick with microswitched sticks and buttons to play Dark Souls III with, I might as well go with the cheap option."

Spoiler alert: Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers, along with the countless third-party knockoffs, are all handled the same via the Linux kernel. Literally any third-party controller that claims Xbox One support at the barest of minimums is handled perfectly as a gamepad. Oh no, PowerA controllers can't get firmware updates without the Windows application... so fucking what? It's a goddamn gamepad; it doesn't need firmware. It needs to actually register my Sellsword Twinblade R1-L1-L1 spam against Pontiff Sulyvahn while I'm getting mollywopped. If it's the same driver handling everything on Linux, the distinction between 8bitdo, PowerA, PDP, etc just amounts to "does it actually feel decent to use?"

The only controller I've received a still-ongoing service life for is my Logitech F310 that I bought back in high school... and that thing survives because it's built like a fucking cockroach. It's not pleasant to use in the slightest with stiff analogue sticks that are prone to snapping back to center, rigid triggers that feel like they're fighting you, a D-Pad that's somehow worse than the Xbox 360 D-Pad, and an overall light, cheap, and plasticky construction that makes the controller feel like it's worth $5 instead of $20. Yet somehow, this controller outlived my PS4 controllers, both of my Xbox One controllers, and a PowerA I bought during COVID. The F310 is also uniquely suited for retro gaming because it has a hard toggle for Xinput vs. Dinput. It's also one of the few controllers that work on FreeBSD because it's detected as an Xbox 360 controller instead of an Xbox One controller. Windows 10 even detected it as a generic Xbox 360 controller too back when I was still daily driving LTSC.

Y'know... if I could somehow get that level of cockroach quality durability and compatibility out of a modern controller, I would gleefully import one from the Japanese domestic market. Even if the import process with the tariffs means that I'll pay more for a niche JDM controller than I would for an official, new-in-box Xbox Series X controller.

Anker is a solid brand, I highly recommend their products.

I love me some Anker products, but stick to their batteries and cables. Their headphones are abject rubbish. For the price of Anker Q30s, you can get a midrange Sony bluetooth ANC headset for slightly more money and much better build quality. Even in an ever-enshittifying age where stuff from 2016 is built better than stuff from 2026.

I like 8bitdo because I like that it's a USB SNES style controller. I will happily go for other brands if I find other good controllers made to look like old Nintendo controllers.

I didn’t really understand magsafe, until I got both an Macbook Pro 2010 and a Macbook Air M1. Magsafe is actually so handy for when the cable’s connection degrades. But I doubt magsafe USB-C would work, with the data lines needing to be unobstructed.

It's a shitshow of 10 different charging standards. Some of my devices are picky about cables, others aren't. On one then charges at 5V or 9V depending on how you plug the cable in.
That’s probably the most annoying part of USB-C and why USB-A will still be around for decades. At least USB-A has grounded standards whereby anything I plug into a USB-A socket just werks. I have three different USB-C cables just to accommodate all the devices, the exact opposite of what USB-C is meant to solve.

The Linux kernel has hid-playstation, the official upstream module maintained by Sony, mainlined as of Kernel 6.2 c. 2023ish. Before that, there was hid-sony from Kernel 3.15 back in like... 2013-2014ish. It's been mainlined in one form or another for a long ass time, and Steam itself doesn't pull anything for DualShock specifically (at least to my knowledge). Instead, Steam has Steam Input which translates DS4 into Xinput for most games where DS4 isn't inherently supported by the game developer.

In my experience, a PS4 controller is more than capable of playing Proton games on Linux even through the Heroic launcher when I'm playing GOG stuff instead of Steam. There's some quirkiness to it all. Button 0, 1, 2, 3 exist on Xinput (re: Xbox) for the D-Pad, but it's Buttons 11, 12, 13, and 14 for the D-Pad if you're using a PS4 controller. The only real area where I've noticed DS4 controllers completely shitting the bed on Linux is if I'm using an emulator like Azahar or MelonDS where the inputs technically work, but there's a ton of input lag and general slowness. Can't say the same doesn't happen on DuckStation and PCSX2, but if it does, then it probably happens to a lesser degree. Maybe some emulator vs. proper PC game unto itself shenanigans happening? Don't know, don't care enough to learn.

That's not the "best" solution. That's an overengineered "solution" for a use case that still emerges semi-frequently among people who've jumped ship from Linux to Windows. Here's a simpler idea: just install or otherwise clone Windows onto a portable SSD, plug it in via USB, drag and drop system files into your WINEPREFIXes as needed, maybe even manually boot into it whenever there's a tangible need for proper Windows. No faffing around with QEMU, Qubes, or any of that nonsense. I've personally chosen to eschew Windows wholesale because of the announcement of Copilot + Recall being mainlined into Windows 11 back in 2024, but I still kept the portable drive around for stuff like Windows fonts, specific DLLs that I can't reliably find copies of online, y'know, stuff along those lines.

I can appreciate the turbosped in you that gloats about doing generic sysadmin tasks we should all do but don't because we're lazy fucks. Genuinely, good on you for making frequent backups and keeping a rescue USB stick for when shit gets borked. Having said that: don't perpetuate the "your use case is invalid" meme. We get enough of that smug bullshit from the GNOME developers and their pied piper in Emannuele Bassi, not to mention the broader Red Hat Poetterware ecosystem. Saying "Windows is not needed" full stop is definitely true for you, but it damn sure ain't true for every single jackoff reading this thread.

I have a GuliKit KK3, it has hall effects sticks and triggers. Never had a problem on Linux.

They're good, but their power supplies (even the "GaN" ones) have the same flaw pretty much every multi-port power supply has: any time anything gets plugged in or unplugged, every port drops power for a moment because the controller running the show resets to reconfigure itself.

Not a big deal for most use cases, since a momentary interruption just means charging is interrupted for a moment.

But if you happen to be using a fancy barrel connector adapter that spits out 95W on the barrel end for, say, an HP EliteDesk mini PC and eats USB-C on the other, negotiating the required 19.5V via USB-C protocol (as is allowed), that momentary blip is enough to shut down the damned PC. So if you happen to be running four of 'em off one power supply, despite it having adequate power capacity and running perfectly fine for hours at a stretch, and something hiccups or a cat tickles a cable or something, all four of the little bastards lose power just long enough to shut off.

There's reputed to be only one power supply that can furnish uninterrupted 100 watt power over multiple USB-C ports without twitching when something gets plugged in or unplugged, the "UGREEN Nexode 500W GaN Charging Station," but that motherfucker is $180 and I'm not quite desperate enough to risk that much cash on an experiment just yet.

Seriously, how is it that of all the things that got easy on Linux, making usable boot drives for arbitrary o.s.es isn't one of them? (I say this as if Rufus is a default Windows app, lol) The last time I tried making a bootable W11 drive off of Ubuntu it was so tedious I instead made it off of a Windows laptop with Rufus.
