Arslan by mj engh. Pretty short, pretty fucked up. Kind of 80s shock sci-fi I guess but it was good enough to be included in the sci FI masterworks imprint by gollancz. I collected a bunch of them.

Not sure why it was on that imprint, there weren't any real sci-fi elements but I guess it pointed the way to a lot of dystopian near future grim dark that would emerge in the 00s. It broke with the usual mold at the time of setting things far enough in the future that there was tech, societal, physiology changes and instead placing it in contemporary society
I remember hearing about a manga/anime series called "Heroic Legend of Arslan" from the guy that wrote "Legend of the Galactic Heroes". Makes you wonder were the name comes from originally.

There's a Turk Seljuk sultan named Alp Arslan, but it's much more likely people only know the name from Narnia since the word itself does mean "lion" in Turkic.

It was a common name among medieval Turks and Persians. I'd assume that might be why Aslan is called what he is. Heroic Legend of Arslan is great too BTW.

I read the series in middle school and even as a teenager I realized how poorly written the books are.

I listened to Left Behind as radio dramas and they gave me a healthy fear of a sudden and terrifying the end of the world as a kid.
