I picked the last 5 years because that is what I deemed the most insane. You are completely correct that the institutional rot was already there. But as you said, COVID accelerated it to the no return point.
I see it every day frankly. Everything is digital now. I remember when stores had massive DVD and Blu Ray selections, fuck I remember movie rental stores. You weren't always at the beckon call of the corpo overlords of what you were allowed to watch.
Now these things still exist. A lot of the old ways of doing things still do. You can still get a landline phone in your house and only use a flip phone. But it is inconvenient. Purposefully. The corpos realized before, but especially AFTER COVID, that your data, all of it, is valuable as fuck. It's how they sell you shit. It's why oddly convenient YouTube ads pop up on your phone after talking with a friend or one Google search.
