It's why we have so many descendants of dalit Indians in South Africa (the charous). The first real Indian workforce the British sent out to the colonies was to Port Natal and the original wave of laborers were all dalits jumping on the first boat out of India with the small hope that one day their descendants might have a better life outside of their enternal fate of cleaning brahmin toliets. We integrated them into our class system, they worked hard doing manual labour for 100 years and now their descendants are respected members of society. I will happily let a Chetty or Naidoo operate on me (and I have) if I know they have a South African passport and a valid medical degree from UCT. The problem for the rest of the world is now every jeet that actually wants to escape India and not bring it with them comes to South Africa because the India culture here is built around exactly that rather than scamming.
So when did people start realizing that India is far from a spiritual place?
The closest thing I can think of is the Slumdog Millionaire movie in 2008. All the way from slums to Hindu-Muslim warfare to public defecation to blinding children for begging. Also child trafficking.

Yes, and even in the dynastic class system with merchants at the bottom many were wealthy and exercised influence unofficially. In the late Ming the entire southern part of the country almost seceded from the north due to merchant scheming over high taxes and corruption imposed by the north.
