There’s a lot of Catholics in Texas, especially North Texas where this took place. I imagine there’s a few young Catholics out there who think the Falangists and Franco were based and awesome and whatever else, or just know what they basically represent in today’s world, which is pride/admiration for one’s Catholicism and European Heritage in an era where people with little or nothing to be proud of are screaming at people like these young men and acting like they are the most advanced and sophisticated people ever.

Personally I think you can be Catholic and based but without tying yourself down to historical political movements and ideologies that are limited in scope and longevity, but I get that that’s a contentious point.

I think that explanation makes the most sense. Even so, plenty of other warring countries have had citizens in similar situations (i.e. citizens supporting country A surrounded by citizens supporting country B), but they were largely still able to avoid this kind of situation. Personally, I think the fact that this seems to be unique to only the India-Bangladesh border, and nowhere else (at least not to this degree), says something about the jeet (in)ability to reach a sensible outcome in problem solving.

Oman and the UAE have or used to have a couple of funky first and second-order enclaves with each other close to the coastline.

Also, a couple of the Stans have weird first and second-order enclaves too (I think Uzbekistan and Tajikistan?).

Both these examples come from nations whose statuses have changed frequently in the last few centuries, so it’s understandable that there would be odd border oddities, especially when you consider how the European empires and the Soviet communists either administered or directly controlled these territories at different points, and so the borders would reflect whatever they would be deemed appropriate or beneficial at the time for their purposes.

With the soviets this is especially the case, as the stans are full of people that were ethnic minorities in Russia that got “relocated” to camps in the middle of bumfuck nowhere throughout the central Asian Soviet vassal states.
