That's true regarding many countries in that region. Let it be Japan, China or Russia. In private, they talk smack about their country, the government, and the state of their lives all the time.

My conspiracy theory is that the family gets threatened by the government in charged situations like this and they have to play along with the Reginald Denny "can't we all just get along?" message and be rewarded or say what they really think and get locked up on BS charges later after the media attention shifts elsewhere.
It's not a conspiracy theory because that's literally what happens. In a high profile event like this, the family of the victim are assigned a victim liaison officer, whose role is ostensibly to provide support and information during the process to trial for the perpetrator. In reality they tak advantage of the vulnerable state of the family to lay down not so subtle threats of social ostracism, coupled with promise of reward and protection if the victims repeat the script they're given.
